Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, and how they may affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The pewag Servo RS self-tensioning tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you might want to get a chain with V-bar links that can bite into the ice you need to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install. Unlike other self-tensioning chains, the Servo RS have tensioning devices built into the side chains so there's no need to route additional tensioners when you install them. Just make a couple connections, move the button on the ratcheting device to "drive," and you'll be able to see the chains begin to tension. Because they self-tension more and self-center as you drive, these chains will give you a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and check their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the side wall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.
  1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.
  2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the cable, which will sit behind the tire.
  3. Connect the inner chain to the outer traction chain at the bottom of the tire using the large red hook, then activate the servo device to ratchet the chain tightly into place.
  4. Once all the connections are made, move the switch on the ratchet back to "drive." The rachet will tension the chains, then center and fully tighten them on your wheels as you drive forward, giving you a perfect fit.

Removing the chains is as quick and easy as putting them on. Just move the switch to "open," pull the cable to give the chains some slack, and disconnect.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • What Tire Chains Offer Rim Protection for My Size 225/40-18 and 215/45-18 Tires on My 2009 Mazda 3?
I have a great tire chain solution for you. Unfortunately, we do not carry a Konig CG9 model like the Konig Self-Tensioning, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - D Link - CG9 # TH2004205105 that will fit your 225/40-18 tires or the OEM size of 215/45-18 on your 2009 Mazda 3. However, if you are concerned about protecting your rims, I did find a model that will fit both tire sizes that includes the same outer covered band as the CG9. That is the pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning...

  • What Tire Chains are Compatible with Gravel Roads on My 2010 Volkswagen Gold with 225/45-17 Tires?
I have a great gravel-road solution for you. Unfortunately, since the pewag Servi RS Chains # PWRS74 are only rated for on-road use only, they are not compatible with gravel roads. With that being said, I assume that you have standard 225/45-17 tires on your 2010 Volkswagen Golf. We do have great chains that are confirmed to fit your tires that are constructed for both on and off-road use. • Are 4 Snow Chains Better Than 2 Snow Chains in Snow and Ice Conditions
Using snow chains on 4 tires would provide more traction than if you were to use snow chains on 2 tires, but whether or not it is safe to do so is entirely up to your vehicle manufacturer. Some vehicles are only permitted to use chains on either the front or the back tires depending on clearance and if there are any components that are liable to become damaged. If your vehicle is the 2009 Volkswagen GTI that you input in the fit guide then you likely have 225/45-17 size tires. The Glacier...

  • How Effective Would Adding Snow Tire Chains be on a 2010 Volkswagen GTI
Before buying snow tire chains you will want to check your owners manual or with the Volkswagen dealer, to see if you can install snow tire chains on your 2010 Volkswagen GTI, or if there are any limitations. A 4wd vehicle is nice to have in the snow, but the tires make a difference and how somebody drives with the 4wd can make a difference. The 2010 Volkswagen GTI is a front wheel drive vehicle which is designed for performance and handling so it will use the larger 17 inch and 18 inch...

  • Snow Chains For A 2024 Mini Clubman With 225/40R18 Tire Size
Hey Stephen, The owner's manual for a 2024 Mini Clubman states that only the tire sizes listed below can use tire chains so even though the Pewag Servo RS Tire Chains # PWRS74 would be a fit for your tire size the manufacturer doesn't recommend using them. 195/60R16 195/55R17 205/45R18 The wording isn't totally clear though and your size has a smaller diameter than the 205/45R18 so I would check with your local Mini dealer to see if they would allow for tire chains. The # PWRS74 is...

Thanks for reaching out! When you installed the pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # PWRS74 on your 2022 Mazda 3 215/45R18 tires did you loosen up the self-tensioning device?
