How Counteract Tire Balancing Works

Once your tire begins to roll, the beads will get distributed around its interior thanks to centrifugal force. As the wheel continues to spin, the heavy spot in your unbalanced tire will pull up and down on your vehicle's suspension. This will cause the beads to shift in the opposite direction of that pull. The beads will continue to migrate until there are enough of them on the opposite side of the heavy spot to balance your tire.

Video Transcript for Counteract Tandem Axle Trailers and Pickup Trucks Tire Balancing Beads Review

Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're going to be going over and showing you how to install the counteract tire balancing beads. So what our tire balancing beads and what do they do, well, actual beads themselves. They're very small. They're made out of glass and there's going to be thousands of them we're injecting into our tires through the valve stem. Now, what this does is when we have our trailer, we're driving out on the road, there's going to be tons of vibrations in there. When our suspension moves, we're hitting our bumps and that inertia is going to be forcing those beads to be high or low spots on the tire.

Therefore helping them, even out the ride and reducing those vibrations. If you've ever taken your vehicle in for service somewhere, chances are, if you've got new tires, put on, they're going to be balancing those wheels, which simply entails placing weights on the wheels to match up the high and low spots. So your tire is nice and smooth when you are driving. If you didn't do this, you would definitely notice a lot of vibrations in your wheel. Well, the same principle is going to apply to our trailers here.

Most trailer tires when, even if they come pre mounted, they don't actually have any weights on them. Therefore it may not be super noticeable, but we are going to have some vibrations here, if they're out of round, by placing the beads in the tires here, we're definitely going to cut down on those vibrations a lot. We're also going to be increasing the life of our tires because we're going to get much more even tire wear. And then last but not least, we're going to be improving our fuel economy as well. So something unique about these beads.

When we compare them to just a standard stick on tire weight, those are going to be placed and we're balancing our tires on the machine there. And they're going to be replaced in an exact spot. However, as you wear your tires out, the high, low spots of the tires actually change. So that weight that you stuck on, on your wheels could actually change. And it's not giving you the best performance.

With the balancing beads here, they're going to be continually adjusting. So the deeds inside the tires, they're actually going to be adjusting to different spots based on inertia, the inertia from our suspension, when we're traveling down the road, therefore it's always going to find a lower high spot there and place the beads accordingly. So our tire is always round doing a smooth even ride. So in regards to compatibility, the majority of applications have going to be on trailer tires. However, you can use these tire balancing beads. They're going to function the same way as they would on the trailer tires on most other tires, such as motorcycles, UTV, and ATV tires, even some commercial big rigs. There is one exclusion, however, and that's going to be passenger vehicles. Unfortunately, you really don't want to use these balancing beads in passenger vehicles because the suspension is simply too smooth. It's too refined for these beads. Everything is already going to be pretty much where it needs to be when it leaves the factory with the factory weights. So you don't unfortunately want to use the bouncing beads on your passenger vehicle, but for everything else, there's going to be an option for you. So depending on your application, you may or may not have TPMS sensors on your trailer. It's certainly more common for people nowadays, especially the screw on type that simply replace the cap. Now, if you have these, thankfully, a big question we get is whether these beads will damage them and they will not. You are perfectly fine to use the balancing beads with the TPMS system. I will say, though, if the TPMS system is internal to the tire, you will have to break the tire down in order to install the beads. You can't install them through the valve stem if there's an integrated TPMS within that system. So there's actually a few different balancing beads kits. And the difference between these kits is the amount of beads that come in the bags. So in order to get the correct one, you need to come to the tires that you're going to be installing the beads in, and you need to note their size, for our particular trailer tire here, you size is going to be listed on the sidewall. And for this particular trailer, it's going to be an STO575R14. Therefore we're going to need to use the chart on the product page for these tire balancing beads to ensure we get the correct weight. And again, the weight sort of translates to how many beads are in that packet because we will be installing one full packet per tire. So if you're on the fence about getting these beads, you may not necessarily want to put them in brand new tires because you don't want to waste them when you shortly replace those tires down the line. Thankfully though, these balancing beads are actually really usable. Therefore we can take them out of the tires that we have now. And if we upgrade tires to a larger size, or if we just simply replaced them with a newer set, we're going to be able to reuse those balancing beads. Now counteract does offer a collection bag that you can use to get these out, or you can be careful just to get them when you break down the tire. The main thing we need to be careful of when we're using the beads is contamination. We obviously don't want to a dirt and dust that we're putting back in the tire. So I definitely recommend the collection bag. If you do plan on reusing these. So now we've taken a little bit of time, gone over the balancing beads, how to choose the right one and what benefits you can expect. I think now it'd be a good time to take our trailer out in the road here. So we've gone over some details of the tire balancing beads for you. Now, I think it's going to be a great time to really get this trailer out on the road. Let those beads settle in the correct positions in the tire so we can really see how well it works. Now we're going to have our buddy Jake here. This is his trailer. We're going to have him pull it because he's the one who was pulling it before. So he knows how it feels normally. We're going to ask him a couple of questions about how he thinks it feels, and if we can notice a difference. All right. So tell me, Jake, just put a few miles on your trailer here. Did you notice anything different, what'd you overall think about the productThe difference is just barely noticeable. I can tell there is a difference. It's not huge. It's not like a wow factor, but I think for the price that this kid costs, it's worthwhile knowing that I've done everything I can to be able to get my tires balance. When you know, when driving down the road, it's a little better, but you know, again, it's not gonna, it's not going to be that noticeable because it is a trailer. Yeah, certainly that's kind of what I was thinking. I didn't necessarily think as soon as we got in there, we're going to see like a major difference. A lot of the benefits of these tired beads here kind of happened behind the scenes. Like if we we're really stringent in tracking our gas mileage, I do think we would see some improvements over some long trips. And again, with the tire wear thing, having your tires more balanced, the tread wear is definitely not going to wear down as much. So I definitely think we would see some long-term improvements rather than that short term, immediate gaining. So to start your installation today, we need to find access to an air compressor because we will be deflating our tires and then reinflating them. So if you have an air compressor at your garage at home, that's great. We could do this in the driveway, or if not, you could simply find a gas station that has an air compressor pull up and park there that will certainly allow us to get the job done. So once we found access to an air compressor, we can either install the balancing beads with our trailer, coupled to the vehicle, or we can obviously unhook the trailer as well, just to make sure it's nice and sturdy. So it doesn't roll away while we're working on it. But now the next thing we need to do is we need to make sure that the valve stems are going to be facing the bottom of the tire. You can see the one here is at top, so we need to rotate this tire. So it's facing the bottom. Now the easiest way to do this is to just simply take a four jack here, jack up the side of the trailer. That way we can spin the wheel, make sure that the valve stem is on the bottom. We need to go ahead and repeat that for all of our four tires. I'd also like to point out that since we have a tandem axle trailer, we're only going to be doing one tire at a time. Therefore we don't have to worry about lifting in supporting the trailer. But if you have a single axle trailer, then you would maybe want to look into a set of Jack stands. So you could raise a trailer up off the ground. Therefore you don't have to worry about damaging anything by deflating the tire. Let's go ahead now, Jack up our trailer here so we can rotate all of our wheels and tires so that the valve stems are facing down. So now that we have all the valve stem pointing down, what we need to do is we're actually going to be deflating the tire. Now, again, depending on if we have a single or a tandem axle trailer, we have a tandem axle trailer. So I'm just going to be working with one tire at a time. So there's no need to rush. If you did want to do them all at once, you could easily just support the trailer by the frame there and let the axle same freely, but just doing one at a time is going to be best for us. So in order to remove the valve cores, we need to first obtain the correct tool which comes in your kit. And it looks like this, our particular one was actually inside the bottle. So this is what the valve core remover looked like and this end here is what actually removes them. So this little fitting here, this is going to go inside the valve stem, and then we're just going to simply unscrew the valve core so we can show you that now, we'll come down here, we're going to remove the valve cap, just like so, and we're going to take our handy little tool here, and we're going to insert that inside like so, you're going to turn it until you feel it touch and it should go in all the way, just like that. And now we're just going to simply turn it to the left, to loosen it. We're going to start loosing it. You will have some air rushing out, so no need to be alarmed. So once it's fully loose, that thing can find a sheet out of there. So I'm going to hold it there for a second. Let all the air come out. And I'm going to come up here and I'm actually going to grab it. So here's a closer look at the valve core that we just removed. Now you noticed when I was removing it, once I had it all the way threaded out, I kind of held it there to relieve some of the pressure, because as soon as you remove it, if you just pull the tool straight out, this thing is going to go flying across the room. So it's a good idea to let some pressure out. And then if you seen me in the video, you see that kind of choked up here and grabbed the whole to the core. And then I pulled them both out together. So just something to be aware of when you're removing this, I would actually recommend using a set of safety glasses as well, because we haven't done this too many times. Chances are this thing's going to come flying out. So now that we have our tire deflated, we're ready to go ahead and pour beads in. So the first step to doing this is we're going to take our bottle here. We're going to remove that red cap. And then we're going to take a pair of scissors or sheers if we have some diagonal cutters, really anything work for this, but we want to go ahead and cut part of this tip off above that line there, that's about a quarter inch down from the end. Just take our scissors here and just simply cut that off, just like so. Now we're going to unscrew the cap of the bottle here. And we're going to begin pouring in our beads. So the best way to do this without spilling them is, this actually going to be cutting one of the corners off of our bags. So just like that, then we'll take our bag here, try to pour it over and stick it in the bottle as best we can. And then we'll just begin dumping our beads in being careful not to spill any. So there we go. Once we've emptied the bag and reinstall our cap here. The next we'll take our two pier and just simply place it over the spout there on the bottle, just like so, so next, we're going to take our bottle here with our beads in it. We're going to take the clear tube and we're going to place it over the valve stem there. Just like so, place it as far down as we can, and we're going to pinch it there at the bottom. We're just going to simply lift open the bottle to let the beads flow through. You can see here, we did have quite a few start to clump up in the tube, so they recommend just simply squeezing the bottle to push those beads through. So it looks like there's a bit of a trick to actually getting these beads in the tire. I initially just simply turned the bottle completely upright there letting all the beads fill into the tube. And they weren't really flowing through the valve stem very well. So what I've found is if we actually just kind of hold the bottle on the side here and just pump it slightly to let a little bit of the beads come through the tube there, not all at once. They seem to be going in much better that way. So we're about halfway through her bottle here. And I'll be honest with you guys. I kind of thought these things we're just gonna pour right into the tire. It is however, taking a little bit longer than I expected, but as long as we have some patience, we should be able to get them in there without spilling. Now, if you dump too much at once and the tube deals up at the beads, they're not going to go in there as effectively. So I recommend just pinching the tube there, at the valve stem, just tapping the bottom of the bottle, to send them back into the bottle and get them out of the tube. And once we do that, we can just reinsert and continue the method that we've showed you. So now we're coming to the last of our bottle here, getting the last few beads in there. And I would say this probably took me about three or four minutes just for this one tire here. So as we said, not necessarily as fast as I thought, but it doesn't take you a whole lot of time. We really didn't spill that many only a couple, but once you got all the beads in the tire, now, what we're going to do is we're going to be grabbing the new valve core, not the one that we removed. The one that comes in the packaging, we're going to be reinstalling this into the valve stem. Now we actually have a specialized tool designed for this exact purpose that Counteract makes this is going to be a valve stem torque tool. And this is what we're going to use to reinstall it. But if I can be honest with you guys here, you can reinstall it using the one that we used to remove it earlier. This one, just simply ensures that we have the proper torque for our valve core. However, I've installed many of these valve cores using the removal tool, and I've never had one come out on me. So if you want to do everything by the book, you can pick this up here along with your kit, but if not the one to remove it will work as well. So we're gonna begin tightening until this starts to click on it, right there. Now we know we have the proper torque. So now we're going to go ahead and fill our tire to the manufacturer's stated PSI. If you're ever unsure of this, this is actually a very common question, We get asked here at etrailer, what should they fill their tires to And our answer is always to the max PSI listed on the sidewall of the tire. So we're going to go ahead and locate that now and then fill it accordingly. So it's kind of hard to see, cause unfortunately, ours is going to be upside down on the bottom of the tire, but right around where the load range, you can see this one says load range D and directly under that it says, a 65 PSI Colt. So we're going to take out our tire pressure gauge here. We're going to fill our tires to 65 PSI. So that's 65 there. So what we're going to do now is, we're going to install our new valve cap. Just simply thread that on. Now, before we move on to our other tires, what we need to do is, we need to inspect our wheel for any wheel weights. Now, since we're doing this on a trailer, chances are, we're not going to have any wheel weights, but it is a good idea to just go ahead and check beforehand. There's two different kinds of wheel weights. There's ones that stick on to the inside of the wheel. They're going to be located here possibly all the way around the tire, but they will be on the inside. And they're just going to be stick on. In which case we could use some sort of tool. Counteract does make a tool for this exact purpose. So let's stick on a wheel weight, just using the adhesive. We would just simply get up between them and the wheel and pop them off. The other type of wheel weight are going to be the clip on type. And those actually clamp onto the outside edge of the wheel there. These are aluminum wheels. So those actually wouldn't work on this. Those are more for steel wheels, but in that case, we would go ahead and remove those as well. There is a tool specifically for that, but I've been able to successfully remove them with a flathead screwdriver, just make sure we're extra careful. But again, if you're doing this on a trailer, chances are, you're not going to have any of those weights. It's just a good idea to go ahead and check that beforehand, because it will throw off the balancing beads. But now that we have this tire done, we're just going to simply repeat that same process on our other three tires. And that's going to do it today for our look and installation of the counteracts tire balancing beads..

I have a 1970 VW van with 14" wheels that most shops can't balance because they lack the adapter ring to fit the wheels. WARNING on the packaging on these - each outer bag contains an inner bag of beads + a valve stem + a valve cap + a valve extension. The valve parts are just loose inside the outer bag. Problem is, it wasn't clear that the valve parts are even included with the product, and on 3 of the 4 I received, the inner bag was broken. The inner bag was broken on the first one I opened, so not knowing any better, I just dumped the whole thing in the tire and sealed it up, not realizing I had sealed up valve parts in my tires! The second one I opened had in intact inner bag, so I realized my mistake. I had to break the bead on the first tire to get the valve parts out! I haven't driven on them yet, so not sure how well they work, but thought folks she be forewarned about the packaging issue.

Excellent tool! We use this often to install bead balancing on preassembled tires on trailers and trucks. It does have a learning curve (cant feed it too fast) but once you figure it out, it is perfect for the job. Just ordered a replacement in Aug '22, the replacement came preassembled and the hoses were backwards, a simple fix.
