Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommended Tires and Wheels to Replace 8.75 x 16.5 Trailer Tires
To replace the 8.75 x 16.5 tires on your trailer, I recommend going with an ST235/85R16 size, which will be the closest to what you have but on a 16 inch wheel. The lowest load rating we have available for this size is a Load Range E. If the hubs on your trailer have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I recommend the Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire with 16 Inch White Wheel # AM32739. If your hubs instead have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, then you will want the Kenda Karrier tire and...

  • Dually Wheels for 235/86-16 Tires
We currently have a dually wheel available by itself but no tire and wheel combos for duallies. Any tire shop should be able to mount the tires on the wheels for a nominal fee. For a 16 inch dually wheel we have the 16x6 inch with 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern with 5-1/2 inch offset # AM20783 or # AM20790.

  • Choosing Appropriate Tires for 5th Wheel Camper Based On Weight
You are correct that when choosing a tire, the load capacity of the tires are added together for the total capacity. For a trailer like you mentioned with a total weight of 13,000 pounds, you will want each tire to have at least 3,250 pound weight capacity. There is not a specific percentage of extra capacity that needs to be taken into consideration. You can certainly use a tire with a larger weight capacity to have some breathing room. The hitch weight is placed on the tow vehicle,...

  • What is the Ply Rating on Available 235/85-16 Tires
We have several different ST235/85R16 tires available, and also tires with wheels. The ply rating depends on the load range of the particular tire. For example, the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10501 which has a load range of F has a ply rating of 12. The Westlake ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # LHWL410 which has a load range of G has a ply rating of 14. The Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" White Wheel - 8 on 6-1/2 # AM32739 has a load range of E so the...

  • Is There a 12 Inch Brake Drum for a Dexter #84 Spindle Available?
The #84 spindle from Dexter will limit the diameter of the brake drum to 10 inches, so this will not work with a 12 inch diameter brake, unfortunately. 12 inch brakes are generally fitted to 5,200 to 7,000 pound axles, which will typically have a much larger inner bearing. These will also use the 8 on 6 1/2 bolt pattern for the wheels. The only way to keep a 5 or 6 lug drum on your current axles will be to cut off your current brakes and either weld or bolt on a 10 inch brake, like the...

  • How to Raise a 5th Wheel Trailer to Ride Level with New Truck
Raising a trailer by increasing the tire and wheel size isn't the most effective method. Your current tires are about 28.3 inches in diameter. Larger ST235/85 R16 size tires have a diameter of about 31.7 inches. Almost 3-1/2 inches difference. However, they aren't going to raise your trailer anymore than maybe an 1-1/2 inches or so at the most. First of all only half of the diameter will make a difference on how far the center of the hub sits above the ground. Then you'll also likely...

  • 235/60-16 Load Range E Tire and 16 x 6 White Spoke Steel Wheel for Big Tex Trailer
The Kenda Karrier 235/85-16 Load Range E radial tire mounted on a 16 x 6 white spoke wheel, part # AM32739 that you'd looked at would have plenty of capacity to cover the GVWR of your trailer. I've linked to a product description video that you might find helpful.

  • What is the Correct Inflation for Karrier Trailer Tire # AM32739 and is it Mounted and Balanced
The tire, # AM32739, should be inflated to 95 psi regardless of load size. The problem is that under inflating a trailer tire will lead to degradation of the tire. On trailer tires, the side walls are thicker than on car tires so they can handle more vertical load. An under inflated tires side walls will heat up more often and quicker and will lead to early wear and possible failure of the tire. The tire and wheel combinations, like the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16 inch...

  • Tire and Wheel Combinations Weight Capacity and Tire Pressure the Same as Trailer Tire # AM10295
The # AM10295 tire was designed for an 8 lug wheel, but will also fit a 6 lug wheel. This will change the weight capacity of the tire and wheel combination to the lowest rated item in the setup, but the recommended tire pressure of the tire will remain the same. What you will want to do is to make sure that the valve stem used in the setup is a metal 100+psi valve stem like # AM20906. The # AM32739 and the # AM32764 tire and wheel combinations will all have the maximum load of 3,640lbs...
