Combination Lights for Trailers Over 80" Wide

Flatbed trailer over 80" wide with combination tail lights

If a trailer is 80" or wider at its widest point, then it requires rear clearance lights in addition to basic trailer lights. These clearance lights indicate the width of the trailer when it is viewed from the back.


To meet these requirements on a flatbed utility trailer where the bed extends past the wheels, you can install combination trailer lights that include the rear clearance function. For proper mounting, the lights must be installed at the widest points on the rear of the trailer - one on each corner.

    If you want to make a side marker light blink with the turn signal it will have to be tapped into the turn signal/brake light wire for that side. But then it will also come on with the brake lights. And you would not want to also attach it to the running light circuit because it would back feed and lights would come on when they should not.     The Replacement Side Marker Lens # A2RB will simply need a screw that fits the 1/4" diameter hole and is longer than 1-1/4", so the choice is yours as there is no recommended hardware. Based on the photo you provided, I do recommend replacing the entire # ST2RB fixture because the plastic housing is pretty clearly damaged. This side marker lens is the same length and width as the Peterson Replacement Lens, part # 55-15R, you have referenced, but is 1-1/2 inches tall. The # A2RB lens will fit on a trailer light like the Optronics Square Trailer Tail Light, part # ST2RB.

    Theres no reason you couldn't upgrade your square incandescent lights to the rectangle LED trailer light kit part # TLL160RK that you referenced. LED trailer lights are a great option as they basically last forever and only draw a fraction of amperage when compared to incandescent bulbs.

    The problem you're having with your new wiring could be related to the ground, especially since it sounds like you may have added more lights than were originally on the trailer.     It sounds like you could have more than one issue on your trailer but the most prevalent is a weak ground or so it seems. I recommend that you start by checking both the trailer side and vehicle side connector, by check I mean you should remove each of them, sand down the surface and then reattach with new mounting hardware.
