How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Trailer Jack - A-Frame Jack - BD150037

Today we're gonna take a look at the Bull Dog A-frame jack. This is gonna be a top wind style with a max lift rating of 2,000 pounds. Now, Bull Dog is gonna be a very trusted name in the industry. They're gonna be a great jack for multiple agricultural and commercial applications. It's going to have that top wind grip. As you can see, we have our red handle.

It has an ergonomic style to make winding and unwinding easier, so you can lift and drop your trailer with ease. Does have proven reliability. So, even at the rated loud it's gonna have a nice long term use.So, you know you're gonna get years of service out of this jack. The parts are going to be precision fitted so that they're gonna have extra stability, so you don't have to worry about this wobbling out over time. Now, one thing to keep in mind with this particular jack is that the base and mount are sold separately.

As you can see, there's no flange to mount this onto your jack. So, you will have to pick that up separately and probably weld it onto the outer tube there.Again, this outer tube and the inner tube are gonna be painted gray for added durability to help resist any rust or corrosion. And typically we would give you the measurements for this jack from that mounting point. But again, since there is no mounting point on this I'm just gonna give you the overall measurements. And I'm gonna go from the center of that pinhole at the bottom, where you would mount on your drop foot or a wheel or whatever you would want to attach at the base of the jack. Again, a drop foot, wheel, those are all available separately.

You can find all of those additional parts here at etrailer.com.But for our measurements we're gonna go from that center hole to the top pivot point of the crank. So, that's gonna give you an idea of that usable space and how much it's gonna take up. So, in its fully retracted position, like it is right now, it's going to measure 21 inches from the center of that hole to the top part of our crank. If we go to the very top of the handle, that's gonna add two more inches. So, it's gonna go up to 23 inches.

Again, going from the center of the hole to the top of the handle. Overall, going from the top of the handle to the very edge of that inner tube, that's going to be 24 inches. Just to give you a range of what the dimensions are there.Whenever it's fully extended it is going to have 15 inches of travel. So, that's gonna put our extended measurement, going again top of the crank, center of that pinhole there, that's going to 36 inches. If we go from that pinhole up to the top of our handle, that's gonna go up to 38. The total distance, that's gonna be 39. Again, that's when it's fully extended. So, with all those measurements in mind, again it is going to have 15 inches of travel. Now, this does have a max lift capacity of 2,000 pounds and a static capacity of 3,000 pounds. The outer tube is going to have a diameter of two and a quarter of an inch. The inner tube is gonna have a diameter of two inches. And that's going from the outside edge to outside edge for both those measurements. So, two and a quarter for the outer tube. Two inches right on for the inner tube.Again, you can find all of those related parts here at etrailer.com to get this matted up to your trailer. Two parts that Bull Dog does suggest to go with this jack are going to be part numbers BD500339. And that's going to be the replacement pipe mount for swivel jack. So, you can weld that onto this and then a swivel round mount on your jack. Or, you can also get the part number BD500377 and that's going to be a drop leg and pull pin assembly. So, if you want to pick up those particular parts, those are two that Bull Dog suggests to go with this jack. And that's going to do it for our look at the Bull Dog A-frame jack with a top line style and a max lift capacity of 2,000 pounds.
