An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall when loaded. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride when loaded or towing because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for All About the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System-TFRTT150D

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Timbren severe service rear Suspension Enhancement System. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2004 to 2008 Ford F-150 trucks and the 2004 to 2008 Lincoln and Mark LT vehicles. Now in a custom fit part like this, I do like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year model vehicle, and it'll show if this a work through application. Now this kit here will improve the suspension, the handling, and the safety of your vehicle.

This is a severe service kit and these are recommended when you're using a top heavy load, like a slide in camper, a salt spreader on your vehicle. Any application that requires maximum stability, meaning reducing the roll and sway calls for a severe service upgrade. Now, most rubber springs used on the trucks are double convoluted, providing a perfect blend of capacity and ride quality. But the rubber springs used on the severe surface are a single convoluted Aeon spring. The single convoluted springs are shorter and wider.

You can see if I move these two pieces, here's your spring itself. They are shorter and wider. They're designed to resist weight more aggressively, and the result is reduced ride quality exchange for more stability. They do work independently side to side. They'll help compensate for any off center loads, and they do reduce body roll when you're swerving and turning corners.

They will act as shock absorbers taking the brunt of any bumps and rough roads, which will help extend the life of your vehicle suspension. Now this part will include everything laid out here on the table. It'll include the two Aeon rubber springs, the two spacers, and then the vehicle specific brackets and the hardware for a simple installation. Comes with a nice set of instructions that'll describe how this installs and goes together, and it installs directly onto the frame and replaces the bump stop. No drilling is required.

A few specs on this kit. The capacity is 7,000 pounds. Now, even though you're increasing the spring rate by adding this upgrade, this does not increase the gross vehicle weight rating of your vehicle. So you still wanna make sure not to exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight limit. And this kit is designed to work with a suspension system that is in good working order. But that should do it for the review on this Timbren severe service rear Suspension Enhancement System.

  • Use of Timbren Rear Suspension Kit on Flatbed Truck Carrying Heavy Loads
There are several Timbren rear-axle suspension helper spring kits for your 2006 F-150, shown on the linked page, that offer either 6000-lbs of combined load support or 7000-lbs of load support as with the kit # TFRTT1502D that you referenced. This specific kit is designed expressly for heavy-duty 2WD "severe service" vehicles like tow trucks and also vehicles that carry heavy loads. 4WD trucks use kit # TFRTT150D. I spoke to my technical contact at Timbren about your concern. He noted...

  • Spacer to Install Timbren Suspension Kit on 2006 Ford F-150 with 3 inch Lift
Timbren offers lift spacers for applications like yours where a lift kit was installed on the vehicle. For that you'd need the 1 inch spacers part # A25723-90AH00 with the part # TFRTT150D. Since you have a 3 inch lift you'd need a total of 6 of these. This takes up the additional space created by the lift to allow the Timbren to engage like it needs to provide the needed support.

  • Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for a 2006 Ford F-150
For a standard 2006 Ford F-150 you want the 6,000 lb Timbren Set # TFR150D. The 7,000 lb Set # TFRTT150D is a Severe Service kit and is designed for vehicles that will have a pretty constant heavy load like if you use a slide-in camper or salt spreader frequently - or even if you used your truck with a crane or aerial device like what you see with a tow truck. Attached is an installation video of the 6K Timbren kit being installed on a 2004 F-150 for you to check out.

  • Does Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement TFRTT150D Fit on a 2007 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition
I spoke with my contact at Timbren and he stated that you can use the suspension enhancement, # TFRTT150D, if you wanted to on your 2007 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson model. This kit is designed more for vehicles that have been converted into dump trucks, tow trucks, or other similar models or that have a slide in bed camper. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view. I have also included a link to our FAQ article on Timbren systems for you.
