An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall when loaded. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride when loaded or towing because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System-TFRSDP

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System. This system is going to feature these hollow rubber springs that will replace your factory axle bump stops on the frame to help stabilize and level your vehicle. These will act as shock absorbers to help take the brunt of bumps and rough roads and help to keep your vehicle level. Now, when you think about suspension enhancement, most people are familiar with airbags and obviously these are not gonna be airbags. So, there's some benefits and some drawbacks to going with these over airbags.

The first benefit is gonna be the ease of install. So, with airbags, you're not only gonna have to install the airbags but you're also gonna have to run tubing to get those connections where you can air those up. These are going to be very simple to get installed. They are a custom fit with these brackets here. They do include installation instructions for you as well as the hardware that you're gonna need.

But these are specifically designed for your 2008 through 2010 Ford F-450 Super Duty. So, if you do have a F-450 Super Duty, very simple to get these installed. Basically, just remove your factory bump stops, put these in their place, and you're ready to go. Another major benefit of these over airbags is that they're not gonna require any maintenance. They're kind of a "set it and forget it" sort of solution.

So, with your airbags, you're gonna have to add air for heavier loads, take air out for your lighter loads, otherwise it's gonna ride too stiff or you're not gonna have enough support. These use a progressive design, so the leaf springing, these are going to allow your leaf spring ample movement and while they cushion light loads, that's not gonna affect your empty ride of your vehicle at all. But then, that progressive design is gonna provide the additional support needed. When you have your heavier loads, they become more rigid the more they're compressed, the more the weight is added. So, that's gonna help increase the stability while you're hauling heavy loads.

It's also gonna help reduce your vehicle sag, improve your suspension, handling, and safety. These do have a capacity of 12,000 pounds. Now, when you hear that, it's tempting to think that means it's gonna help increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity by 12,000 pounds and that's not the case. There's no suspension enhancement system that I know of that increases your vehicle's weight carrying capacity. So, think of it less like a second set of hands that's helping you lift more weight. Think of it like a back brace. So, it's there to help your suspension, kind of take some of the strain off of it to help it last longer. So, these are gonna do a great job of helping to extend your vehicle's suspension life, to provide a little bit more comfort for your ride, and that sort of thing. Because we do have two independent springs here, they are going to work independently, side to side. So, it's gonna help compensate for your off-center load. So, if you do have a really heavy toolbox on the one side of your truck, or something along those lines, that spring is going to compress more and give it more rigidity and stability and then that other side is gonna be left to engage lightly to help compensate for swerving or turning corners and that sort of thing. It's gonna help reduce that body roll. These do come with a limited lifetime warranty and a satisfaction guarantee. So, if you we're to have any issues with them, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. But when you're comparing airbags to these, one of the downsides to these is that you don't get the custom-ability, don't get to customized them as much as you do with airbags. So, with airbags, you do have the ability to add more support for your heavier loads. So, again, with the maintenance, you'd have to do that with your airbags, where these, you don't have to. They're kind of a "set it and forget it", but you don't have the option to add more support with these. So, some people might prefer airbags for that reason, but overall I think these are gonna do a great job for you. They're gonna help absorb some of that impact to support your suspension, take some of that strain off of it, help it last longer, and make the ride much smoother for you. So, that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

I HAD THESE INSTALLED ON MY VAN OVER A YEAR AGO, I JUST CHECKED THEM OUT AND THEY ARE STILL IN GREAT CONDITION. THE FACTORY ONES I HAD PREVIOUSLY WERE COMPLETLY WORN DOWN. THE TIMBREN LOOK THE SAME AS WHEN THEY WERE INSTALLED.

by:

Install was easy. Raised our Thor Gemini up as product said it would. Great job etrailer!

by:

had this product before. left it on my old truck when I traded. Now I have to replace it, really like what it does for my towing a travel trailer. just have to find time to put it on. speedy delivery arrived undamaged, which is nice.

by:

They definitely reduced sway and lean when driving. But also seems like you really feel every bump and increase road noise?
I assume since vibration from axle can now travel directly to frame?
Might need to upgrade shocks?
Might soften liitle over time?
Might need to get softer onesv
Only have gone 80 miles with them so far.
Will give it another few hundred miles and see what feel then.

Overall pretty happy So far.

2017 Thor Gemini TX

Strainer/basket is holding up well after one year of use in our RV, no issues.

by:

Works great on my 2016 town and country for hauling my pop up camper.

by:

Fast delivery. Disappointed with the instructions. Sense the item was ordered vehicle specific. The instructions said tighten bolts to manufactures specifications.

by:

Easy install & fast shipping! Works gre at!

by:

Works great on my Honda odessey !! Great customer service as always!

by:

Very fast shipping, had product in 2 days! Very easy to install. Hardest part was lifting the RV.

by:

The product first arrived in a damaged box with one of the washers missing, but ETrailer did resupply that. The hardest part was finding a shop able (needs the right tools to depress coil springs) and willing (a potential liability issue messing with suspension) to replace it for a reasonable cost. Eventually a local tire shop agreed to. This was for a 2014 Honda Odyssey, especially for pulling a pop-up. Took two camping trips last summer, one before and one after installation, and I have been pleased with the added stiffness in the rear suspension. It made about 1 to 1.5 inch of difference in resting position when fully loaded and towing and has helped smooth out bumps and humps in the road - both when towing and not.

by:

great product, truck does not squat as much when trailer is attached

by:

Have not driven yet, just installed. Added Monroe coil-overs as well, thanks etrailer.

by:

Delivery was fast, instal was quick & easy. Later today I will see how they work when I hook up to the 5th wheel. By all indications right now I believe they exceed my expectations.

by:

Price was good compared to other sites. Shipped very fast. Installation was very easy.

by:

Put them on and it is exactly what I need to keep truck level when hauling fifth wheel. Easy to install too

by:

I would recommend this product to anyone. I pull trailers with a 1/2 ton truck and will never have another one without this product on it.

by:

I put this product on my Trooper. The install was easy is you take the back wheels off. I towed this weekend and I did not bottom out. If they hold up over time, this is a great product.

by:

BIG difference in handling a load or trailer ... what a great product!!!

by:

Did my due diligence researching this product, including other customer reviews.
Can't wait to install them, but the Winnebago has been put to sleep for the season. I'll submit a performance report in the spring.

by:

15 mins to install and what a difference…. Went from a few inches of sag in the rear to only an inch and over 1000lbs tongue weight didn’t know the trailer was attached to the truck

by:

I had trouble installing these. Turns out they Don't match the factory stops. I trimmed off some rubber on the press fit end and they went all the way in with the truck weight help. I hope they stay in.

by:

Holding up good a year after purchase, work great for pulling my camper

by:

Excellent quality, good prices and great shipping ! Thanks

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for a 2008 Ford F-450 Super Duty Dually
In terms of air springs that are rated higher than # F2446, we do not carry a set rated higher for a 2008 Ford F-450. However, if you do not need to level the bed side to side often, which is one benefit of air springs, I would go with a Timbren system instead. Take a look at the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, # TFRSDP. It is rated for up to 12,000 pounds which is more than twice the capacity of the air springs. The Timbren system is also low maintenance. You will not have...

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2008 Ford F-450 Super Duty
A Timbren suspension kit like the part # TFRSDP would be a great solution for your 2008 Ford F-450 towing a fifth wheel trailer. The Timbrens are designed to provide additional suspension support when needed and when unloaded not affect the ride quality. This would be a great solution for you.
