Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2015 Lincoln MKX

Speaker 1: Today with the 2015 Lincoln MKX, we're going to be test fitting the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero roof rack system and this is going to consist of part numbers RRVA137B-2. These are the Vortex Aero crossbars, 54 inches long. This is the black version. These also come in silver or aluminum colored as part number RRVA137S-2. Below that we have the 2500 series feet here, and that's going to be part number RRRLKVA and then below that we have the fit kit for this car and that's going to be part number DK228. That's going to consist of the clamp here, as well as the rubber pad, that makes contact with your roof. This is a great roof rack system that has a wide variety of accessories that you can utilize with it, such as bike racks, cargo baskets or cargo boxes.

The bars are a nice aero dynamic shape. They're going to help cut down wind noise and drag and the Vortex Aero strips are going to help out with this too.It does come with this tool here to unlock the plastic end caps here and so, pretty much whatever you put in the T-trek accessory here is going to be secure once this is secure. Now you can replace this with a lock, that you can find on e-trailer.com to secure everything even more. With the T-trek accessories here, how this works is, you would remove the strip, insert your T-trek accessory and then cut the strip to length and around it to keep it in place. The end caps themselves are also lockable and they come to you this way and it does come with a set of two keys for these locks. So everything is going to be nice and secure once it's installed on your vehicle.

The points of where it makes contact with your roof, such as where the pad and clamp here make contact. It's going to have this padding here on both to help protect your vehicle from scratches or abrasions once they're being installed. These are custom fit to work around the contours of your roof as well.So let's go ahead and show you how the rear one goes into place. We already have it partially assembled on our table here and we'll go through the rest of the process. So our first step is we're going to take our 2500 series legs here and we're going to install that on the other end of our bar.

To make it a little bit easier on us though, we are going to flip the bar upside down, remove our end cap here and then we'll go from there. Now normally, what would happen is we'd have this strip here with the measurement that would be slid into place and then cut to length depending on how far our actual leg needs to be placed here. But for demonstration purposes we're going to leave this out and just measure it out. We'll take the metal bracket here, slide that in between, like so and then utilizing out handy flat tape here. You'll find this measurement in your instructions with the fit kit. Measure it out and then we'll take our included, blue handle tightening tool here.

Tighten on that bolt in the center until it's nice and tight and it's not going to move. At this point, we can reinstall our end cap and secure that in place. Just to give you an idea of how this would look, once you cut the strip to length, that's how it would set into place there. And this is also going to assist with that cutting down wind noise and drag because you're not going to have this whistling while you're traveling.Okay. Now we'll move on to our fit kit. The first thing we want to do is put in our rubber pad. These are numbered and there is an arrow and you want to pay attention in your instructions because it will tell you whether the arrow faces out or inward or depending on what situation you have. In this case, it is going to be facing outward and it just pushes into place. Very easy. Then we'll take our clamp here and these are also numbered. We'll undo the screw here at the end. Line it up. Just reinstall the screw slightly because we just want it held into place. Now we can move onto our vehicle. Let's start by opening up both of our rear doors. And then we'll set our bar into place gently as to not damage our vehicle. In our next step, is going to be measuring from center to center on the bars on both sides to make sure that the crossbar spreads are going to be even. Now how we got our front bar into position, we measured from the center of the door jam here to the center of the bar. Again, you'll find those measurements in your instructions. And we'll come back to our handy flat tape here. All right, now we'll make sure that it's sitting evenly on both sides. This side could come towards us a little bit. That's good. Then we can take our tightening tool, we're first going to get it snug up against our roof on both sides. Then we'll go back and forth tightening it down more evenly. Giving it about five or six turns each side. Now some other accessories you can put on this roof rack are going to be things like ski and snowboard carriers, kayak carries. So this does have a lot of uses for it.Now the neat thing about this tool here is you see that it's curved on the end. As you tighten this down, it will straighten out and when it's completely straight like this, that means it's torqued down to it's specifications and this is to prevent you from over tightening on both sides.Final step is, we'll take our end caps here. These just fit into place like so, push in. Do this on both sides. All right, now finally, I'd like to give you a quick measurement here to give an idea of how high these sit off your roof. So from the center to the bottom of the bars, it's going to be about two and five eights inches and from the center to the top, that's going to be about three and seven eights inches. So that's more then enough space in between the roof rack itself and your roof. So if you have those accessories that wrap around your bars, it's not going to make contact or damage it.However, if you do have fully loaded bike racks or cargo baskets, you may want to keep that in mind when you're pulling in your garage. Both bars combined have a carrying capacity of 165 pounds, but you always want to double check with your vehicles manual to make sure your roof can take those weights and go by their recommendations. And there you have it for the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero roof rack system on our 2015 Lincoln MKS.

Great service. We sold our Toad and purchased a new (Lincoln MKX) to tow behind our motorhome. I contacted etrailer by phone and after a short dialogue, Blue Ox base plate and wiring components were on the way to my installer. Arrived in 4 days after my phone call ... free shipping. Worked great. ( still haven't towed new car yet). Now we need to modify ourRhino Rack for our canoe. I called Rhino Rack, got info and went back to etrailer. Again a well informed sales person got me all the parts that I needed to modify my canoe Rack for my new car. (Not free shipping). Ok... bottom line... best price on the internet for what I was shopping for. Most informed and knowledgeable sales people. # 2... PPL motorhomes. Hope this helps others. 611843

Fit is good, sturdy rack, video instructions are great and easy to put on. Locks are not that great but will work for me. If someone really wanted to get to the bolt they could easily break the lock covers but then they would have to have the correct wrench. I would still recommend this as a great after market rack. 588055

Jesse was great by answering all my questions and made me feel comfortable ordering the roof rack. Then it even showed up a day early!! It took us about an hour and a half to put the rack together and install it on our car. We did have to get online to watch the video because the printed instructions were great for the measurements, but not on how to put all the parts together. Before I wrote this review, I wanted to check out the performance - and once again, GREAT! I will recommend this product and etrailer.com to everyone. 558024

Review from a similar Rhino Rack DK in Roof Rack

Delivery was fast - racks seem solid. Happy with product. Like the one tool (plus a knife and tape measure) installation. Could use a little more emphasis on the interplay of the two instruction sheets - the general one and the specific measurements for the car model. Maybe big bold capital letters would help in the instructions (when you need to go to the other sheet). The arrows on the black pads are kind of hard to see, so it took a few times to get the configuration correct (pad type, pad direction, foot direction). But that was the only snag, all else is good. The online installation video was helpful. The total cost was almost half what the local outdoor store wanted to charge for Yakima racks (that were only rated 100 lbs.) Since I am carrying a canoe a lot, I went for the 165 lbs rated Rhino rack. I also widened the separation of the racks on the roof about two inches as well. This was for the canoe - and also to get it level, it was a bit down in the nose with the measurements in the instructions.. By moving the rear rack more astern, the spread was wider and level. 234297

As always from etrailer.com, a great product at a reasonable price. Customer service help was not necessary in this case to choose the best product for my vehicle and needs, but has been a painless process for other needs in the past. Etrailer.com is my go-to for aftermarket cargo hardware needs. As always, however, the manufacturer (not etrailer.com) provides marginal instructions. In spite of that, initial assembly and installation on my wife's 2016 Escape took about an hour, and it looks like the rack will do a great job for us on family trips. I anticipate removal or reinstall Atkin in the future to take less than 15 minutes for one person. 334673

Review from a similar Rhino Rack DK in Roof Rack

Where do I start? I've been whitewater kayaking for 22 or so years now. I've always used used either Yakima or Thule products... Until I bought a 2015 Nissan Rogue with a naked roof. The curvature of the roof and large door jams mean that Yakima and Thule can't make racks for them. I went to a place that does custom installs and again because of the curvature of the roof, they couldn't give me a rack. This meant no kayaking which is really bad news. Enter the Rhino rack system. I purchased the feet, the fit kit, the cross bars and a Yakima "big stack" stacker. The first issue I had is the reccomended size for the Nissan Rogue is only 48 inches. Way too small too haul 4-5 (very light) whitewater kayaks. I called etrailer and they were SUPER helpful, told me I can buy the 65 in cross bars and they'll work fine. I held my breath and placed my order. I was nervous leaving my trusted name brands. The order arrived super fast (they told me it would arrive by Friday but it actually arrived on Thursday) and everything was packaged rock solid. I was impressed. I read the instructions and put the rack system on my car. It took about a hour (it was hot and I worked slowly) but the rack system is SUPER SOLID. I love it. Rhino might have a "forever" customer out of me. -The rack system is very stable. I can't move it with my hands by pushing or pulling. -The rubber stripping you put on the top and bottom of the bar is an awesome added feature AND it reduces wind noise. -Adding the fairing reduced wind noise even further. With four boats on the roof you couldn't hear any extra noise. The ONE thing I dislike is that you need to use the supplied Allen wrench to take the rack on and off the car. It's a small complaint, but other systems I've used in the past don't have them. I paid much less for this system than I would have if I purchased one of the aforementioned systems, but I'm really really satisfied with the product. We will see how well it holds up over long-term use, but it looks awesome! 411250

Very nice product. Well made and fits well. The only issue I had was that I didn't realize there were 2 clamps of one size and 2 clamps of another size. I mistakenly put one of each on the roof rack. Quick switch and then everything was ok so be sure to check them. 171094

Got it the day I left for a trip with my friends, two hours after he said it came my husband text me with pictures! It was easy to install by himself. He said the directions were rough at first but they were fine once he figured it out. I love it on my CX5! I cannot wait to put my hard case on it for traveling. 458070

Review from a similar Rhino Rack DK in Roof Rack

The racks look great and are solidly anchored. I have yet to use them under load but I am pleased with the final product so far. My only complaint was that the assembly process is difficult to understand unless you Google the help videos. The assembly process is confusing and tedious until you gain an understanding of the overall setup. 417226

  • 2011 Ford Edge Limited Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier Recommendation
All the parts you referenced would make a great roof rack/kayak carrier setup for your 2011 Ford Edge Limited. The part numbers # RRVA137S-2, # RRRLKVA, and # DK228 would complete the roof rack. The part number # S510 would be for the kayak carrier, which the adapter part # KC-FK8 is not required, but if you wanted the carrier to install in the track of the crossbars you would want these to allow that. Then for securing the rear of the kayaks the part # RRRBAS would be a great option...

We do have quite a few roof rack options available that will fit your 2014 Ford Edge that has a panoramic Vista Roof. As long as your Ford Edge has a naked roof (no raised side rails or crossbars), I recommend teh Rhino Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack. This system consists of # RRVA137B-2 for the two 54 inch Aero Crossbars, # RRRLKVA for the 2500 Series Legs, and # DK228 for the Custom Fit Kit. A much better solution would be the Rhino Rack part numbers # RREB137B, # RRRLKVA, # RREB-FK1 and # DK228.
