Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack Crossbar Review

Hi, I'm Matt with etrailer, and today we're talking about our Rhino-Rack HD crossbars. These are gonna be some of our more bulky, heavy-duty crossbars, design to carry ladders, lumber, or even kayaks. So let's check 'em out. Today we're really only gonna be talking about the crossbars themselves, and these are gonna be available in a lot of different kits for different needs. So right now, we have just the kit of two, and these are gonna be able to work with a lot of different towers. Like the neighbor we have, they have this track installed on their camper so they can put it on top of their camper.

Now there's gonna be other kits that'll allow 'em to put it on their truck, and you can even get this as a kit of one all the way up to a kit of four to fit other needs you have, whether you want more support throughout the top of your roof or you don't need as much support. But today, we're mainly gonna be talking about the crossbars and what they're capable of doing. And with these crossbars like I was talking about earlier, these are gonna be great if you have any ladders, lumber, or even kayaks. And that's gonna be due to a few reasons because this is gonna be really compatible with some accessories designed to hold those items on. One of those being our load stops that can help keep your load from shifting around.

And we're gonna have the option to mount a cargo roller because loading up those longer items can be pretty difficult too. And we even have this lock or cable and lock that's specifically designed to work with these types of crossbars. And that's not to say that this isn't gonna work in other types of applications as what we have it right now for is more for our work application. If you wanted to use it for more recreational uses, this is gonna be fantastic for that too 'cause like I said, you can strap a kayak to the top of this and you could even put an awning on here too. So if you got done being on the river or the creek, you could go over here by your camper and put out that awning to relax out in the shade.

But I do think this is gonna lend itself more to those work applications, 'cause one, like I was talking about, there are gonna be plenty of Rhino-Rack accessories that can help you with those loads. And the second reason is gonna be 'cause the shape of the bar. This bar is pretty large, both in width and height, and that height is really gonna affect a lot of clamp-on accessories from getting around here. The other fitment issue I see is gonna be this channel we have. And this sure is really only gonna work with a lot of Rhino-Rack accessories.

Any other brands really aren't gonna have anything designed to fit a channel that large. Like if you are planning to use this for more recreational uses and you wanna put maybe a rooftop tent up here or some bike racks that Rhino-Rack doesn't offer, then more than likely, they're probably not gonna fit on here. So what you can do in that instance is instead of getting the HD bars, you can get Rhino-Rack Vortex bars. And really, since they are made by Rhino-Rack, they should use the same towers and just drop in. Or if you wanted to go down the other route, you could get a platform to put on top of here. And a platform rack is gonna give you a whole lot more options because, not only is it gonna give you more mounting options, but more accessories are also gonna be more compatible with it. We can check out some of the specs. So first up, we don't have a weather strip at the very top of the time being 'cause we took it off to showcase what access accessories you can put on here. If you wanna mount any accessories to the top, you're actually gonna have to cut this down to size and really arrange it in a new way so you can fit your gear up here. Now, what this strip does is prevent any water from getting in your channel or any debris. It's also gonna help reduce wind noise when you're driving down the road. What I also like about it is it also gives us additional padding. So when we do have those ladders, that lumber sitting on top of here, it's not damaging anything. It's important to note, we do have an additional channel on the bottom and that's primarily gonna be used to put your tower or connect your tower to, but you can also use it to mount additional accessories, like this locking cable we have. So if you're only using accessories like these, then you shouldn't actually have to cut down your weather strip on top at all and you can leave it as is. As for the construction of the bar itself, it's going made of aluminum. So that's gonna give you a few things. It's gonna make this lightweight, really easy to move, especially with putting this on top of your roof. And it's also gonna make this weather-resistant. So when you have this for a long time out in the elements, it's gonna be less likely to rust over time. Now even though it is pretty lightweight and made out of that lightweight material, it is still gonna be very sturdy and strong. And that does come with a caveat though, because if you do plan on putting some really heavy items on here, it's really gonna depend on what kind of mounting system you have, whether that's a fixed mounting system, if it's on raised or flush rails, that's all gonna be factors on what the max weight capacity is. If you really wanna push that weight capacity with really heavy loads, I'd actually recommend any type of ladder rack. But if you're in a situation like we are in today where you have a camper shell on the back, that really isn't going to be an option. At the end of the day, these are gonna be really good crossbars for certain situations. And that's really gonna come down to what you're hauling and what accessories you want to mount on top of here. And if you do find that maybe this isn't the best option for you and that some of the accessories that you want to put up here won't fit, we have plenty of other options on our website. But if you do find that you are in those working conditions and you can mount those accessories on top of here, then I think this is a great option for you. But that's just a look at the Rhino-Rack HD crossbars. Thanks for watching.

I bought Rhino-Rack Heavy Duty Crossbars because they are made to support Rhino-Rack products, including the Batwing Awning I had purchased for a RAM Promaster High Roof van. The crossbars work very well with the awning. However, I have discovered that Rhino-Rack does not provide a solution to attach non-Rhino-Rack products directly to the crossbars. For example, solar panels. There are fixed attachment points for racks on a Promaster. The distance between the crossbars is greater than the length of my solar panels. So I need to attach side rails to my crossbars for mounting my solar panels. Rhino-Rack does not offer side rails that can be attached to the crossbars. They only make baskets and brackets for specific items. They recommend going to licensed installers to get side rails installed. But I could not find an installer who is willing to help. They don't want the hassle and/or they don't want to jeopardize their standing with Rhino-Rack. So, I am left with having to come up with a solution on my own. Very frustrating.

eTrailer is always very helpful and tried their best to find a solution for me. But they were stymied, too.

If you just need Rhino-Rack Crossbars for other Rhino-Rack products, they are great. If you want to carry other manufacturer's products, look for something else.

Kit was great, except my SnugTop cover required longer T-Bolts for mounting the tracks. The 1.5 inch ones provided were too short. It was a little tough sourcing T/Bolts that would work. It would have been nice if longer T-Bolts could have been an option from Rhino Rack.

It's delivered and installed. Carried a canoe for work today

These look good and feel stout!

Nice rack system, strong and durable. Used on a Ford e350 to mount solar panels. Only draw back, one of the L brackets that goes under the rain gutter was not bent square enough and this caused the bracket to slide off when tightened. I had to adjust this with a clamp and hammer, no issues since.

I got the roof rack mounted anyways. Better pics to come when it's all finished!

I was building a rack for the skin on frame sailboat I built. I needed a crossbar on the top of my truck but the tracks were longer than I needed. I ended up cutting one of the tracks in half and redrilling the holes for the end caps on the cut ends. It was a little difficult to bend the track along the curved profile of my 2019 Ram Classic roof and get the holes where I needed. It says not to use a pop riveter but I didn't have a pneumatic one and have very good grip strength. I needed every bit of my grip strength in both hands to make it work but it did, in fact work. I used tape to cover the track around the rivets and prevent scratches because when the rivets pop, it's a little out of control. Overall it turned out well. I ended up machining a custom crossbar and T nuts due to having a machine shop on my garage.

I’ve had this rhino rack for over 3 years and it’s been excellent on long road trips to the ski slopes. A year after my purchase, I realized that I was missing the plastic coverings that attached to the end of the bars and called their customer service to resolve the missing pieces. I was impressed with their quick response and seamless delivery.

by:

This rack works perfectly on my Nissan Versa for carrying my two Perception Sound 9'6" kayaks. The Rhino-Racks look good to me. The kayaks can rest directly on the rubber pads on the rails, unlike the Yakama racks I had in the past that had bare pipe rails. Also, I expect I can buy parts to adapt this product to a different car without having to buy new towers. I am sorry there are not hooks or loops to attach bungees when carrying lumber. They are noisy in the wind, but less so when carrying the kayaks.

by:

For the most part easy install, very straightforward, inserting the rubber into the rails needed some effort. The video on your website of the install has the rubber already inserted.

by:

Amazing product. Fit, finish, quality is absolutely amazing!
Have hauled our bikes all over MI, through the UP, and back. They never moved. Rack is super simple to remove from the rails to grant full access to the PU bed.
I think this is one of the Best options out there for taking your bikes with you while still having your covered bed space. I also can install a Ski box for the winter. Ski's in the box while gear in the covered bed.

by:

Wish they had a kayak rack to mount to areo bars

by:

These are the perfect racks for a low profile mounting of solar panels on my Sprinter van.

Thanks to etrailer, I am ready to do some serious summer exploring with my 2013 Mazda 3! Rhino Racks, Malone top box, and Kuat bike rack!

by:

I am normally a exclusive Amazon shopper, but etrailer gives equal or better service and has specialty items you just can't find anywhere else. The pricing is great also. This is my 4th order from them on this project and the response has been perfect and the shipping has been prompt. They even offered to take back an item that I did not need. I desperately wanted to mount my 19ft Kayak on my new RV and with some Rhino RT tracks, a Rhino Nautic kayak lifter, a few really heavy duty rivets, and some ingenuity, I was able to accomplish the task. I am replacing the current Nautic bars with the heavy duty bars. See the attached pictures.

Product itself is fantastic, I strongly recommend.

I have had these on for more than a year. Most common use case is carrying a 60lb, 16' long canoe.

I installed with rivets into the roof sheet metal. No issues at all with any rivets coming loose, and zero leakage. I use it with a Yakima crossbars with the quick release mounts. The feet are bolted to the tracks. The crossbars just click into the feet. They take literally less than a minute to attach or remove. I've had a few roof rack systems and this is by far the best.

I used the etrailer videos for the installation and they were more than enough. The riveting was nerve-wracking on the first one, but actually very simple. I suggest really taking your time to assure parallel. This can be tricky depending on your roofline. I marked a centerline down my roof and set the tracks based on that.

The only downside I have run into is not at all a fault in the tracks. Because they rivet into the roof sheet metal, it's susceptible to a bit of flex. I see this under the front of the tracks when I crank down on the bowline of the boat. That's a very large lever pulling down on the rack into the roof sheet metal. No lasting issues, I can just see the metal move.

Another small thing to note is that if your roof is curved where the front or real of the rail lands, the plastic end cap might have a small gap under it. It's not itself held down to the roof, it just slots into the track. I have a small gap on mine and it's not a functional issue at all.

Great product
I installed them on my
2020 GMC Sierra crew cab on the bed rails to use as a Conor rack, kayak rack bed tent .

Works great !

Here are some pics of the Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack Crossbars - Silver - 50" Long - Qty 2 installed on my 2011 Honda CR-V.
That I recently purchased.

by:

The M8 bolts and spring washer were missing from the packaging. A 30min job turned into 3 hours. At this price that is very disappointing. The racks are solid but installation is a bit weird. I wish the M10 channel nut was in a fixed position. It was a pain getting it to stay in the proper orientation while tightening. Also the end caps don't snap in and are easily pulled off. Overall the racks will do good but for the price I was expecting better.

by:

This works great. Very strong and reliable. Holds my ladders with ease. I’ve had it loaded down and done 80mph on the highway no problem.

I do have a solution for you, however awnings like the Rhino-Rack Batwing # RR33100 cannot mount directly to the RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks # RRRTC8JWMY11. The issue is the awning will require a certain amount of vehicle overhang from its attachment point like what roof rack crossbars (as long as they aren't flush with the mounting feet) would provide. This allows for clearance between the awning and vehicle when in use. I also don't recommend attaching an awning to the tracks using...

  • Can Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars Be Cut to Size
It is possible to cut the Rhino-Rack crossbars but I do not recommend this as it will certainly void the warranty. Since we offer Rhino-Rack's Vortex Aero bars in various lengths you can simply choose the individual parts you prefer to make up your rack in the dimensions you prefer. Since you want to end up with bars that are about 44-inches long I suggest part # RRVA118S-2. This is a set of silver Vortex Aero bars that come in that 44-inch size. With these you can use the 63-inch tracks...

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for a 2004 Fleetwood Bayside Pop Up
The SportRack Pop-Up Camper Roof Rack # SR1020 that you referenced will require drilling into the roof of your vehicle to install. The brackets are designed to sit on the edge of the roof of the camper and get bolted there. Without knowing what tracks you have on your roof or how far apart they are it would be hard to know if there is a roof rack foot that would fit them. If the tracks were like the part # RTS508 that are 1-1/2" wide x 1/2" tall you would be able to use the foot pack #...

  • Rhino-Rack Roof Rack Tracks for a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 High Roof
Since the Rhino-Rack tracks # RRRTS546 are sort of a universal product you would just have to make sure the length is appropriate for the available space on the roof of your 2017 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 with the high roof. These tracks are 87-1/4 inches long. If your Sprinter already has the factory tracks there are some direct fit options. I have included a link to them for you. If you want or need to use the tracks then for feet you can use # RLTF, # RLT500, or # RLTP. These are all...

  • How to Use Roof Top Tent on Truck Bed with Tonneau Cover Installed
If the tonneau cover on your Toyota Tacoma installs completely inside the bed rails then you can install crossbar tracks like the Rhino Rack # RRRTV168 that you mentioned for a 5-1/2 foot bed or part # RRRTV208 for a 6-1/2 foot bed. Just note that you will need to cut into a factory plastic bed liner if present where the rivets for the tracks need to attach. Then with the tracks installed you can add the Rhino Rack RLTF Legs # RLTF and the Heavy-Duty Crossbars # RB1800B. Whether or not...

  • Why Pneumatic Or Concertina Rivet Gun Is Used When Installing Rhino-Rack RT-Style Roof Rack Tracks
Per the instructions at step 12 for the Rhino-Rack RT-Style Roof Rack Tracks, it states that you should use the pneumatic or concertina style rivet gun because the rivets have to be firmly seated in the tracks. Using a normal hand rivet gun may not provide enough force to secure the rivets and that would mean removal of the rivets by drilling them out and replacing them. The manufacturer is stressing that the tracks need to be well secured so they recommend the rivet guns that they are...

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for a 2019 Forest River Rockwood Freedom Camper 1940LTD
The roof rack I recommend for your 2019 Forest River Rockwood Freedom Camper 1940LTD is the Rhino-Rack Vortex aero-style system that installs on rails.
