SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock
RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:
SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.
Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.
Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this SmartPlug 50 Amp Power Connector in White Inlet. This is going to upgrade your 50 amp 125 volt or 250 volt RV setup from your traditional twist type to take advantage of all the benefits of the SmartPlug system. This is going to provide the inlet for you to replace your current twist type inlet. So this does have the same mounting holes as your twist type holes. So it's very easy to get mounted in place and they do have the color coded wiring on the backside there.
So very easy to get wired. They also include instructions, walk you through how to get that all set up. So very easy to get that put in place. Your connector is going to wire to your existing power cord. So this will mount in place of your current connector and then like the inlet there, they do include instructions, help you get that all installed as well as your backing plugs, for your 115 and sorry, 125 and 250 volt backing cables there.
So that everything's going to be nice and water tight and sturdy for you. Now, the benefits of the SmartPlug system, this is going to be a straight in connection. So it's going to make plugging in much easier. If you get to your campsite late at night and it's dark, you're not going to have to worry about finding the right point to start your twist in. It's just going to fit in the one way, and then it's going to plug straight in.
So very easy to get connected there. The sleeved design is going to bear the weight of your cable, and if you we're to trip over it, that sort of thing. So all the weight is going to rest on the sleeve rather than on the pins themselves. So it's going to take a lot of strain off those pins, so that they're not going to become loose over time, like some of your other systems. Those pins are a straight nickel plated brass, that is going to maximize your electrical transfer.
It's actually going to provide about 20 times more contact than your curve style design. So you're gonna have less resistance, less heat buildup and it's gonna do a great job of allowing that electricity to flow through there. You can see, this does have a multi-point locking system that ensures that we're going to have a solid connection. So once we get that pushed in, it's going to click in place. And then we can also use the cap to make sure that the connector stays in place there. When we're ready to disconnect, just push on those Marine grade, 3/16 stainless steel tabs that will allow us to pull it out. I'm being kind of gentle because this face isn't connected. You will connect that after you get it wired up, using the hardware that they include. So just for demonstration purposes, I'm trying to be gentle with that, but once it's firmly attached, it's going to be very easy to put that in and pull it out. So very nice system here. It does have a triple waterproof seal to help prevent water corrosion from getting in there to your connections. And the white cap is going to form a weatherproof seal on the inlet when you're not using this. So a really nice system here. If you we're looking to upgrade to the SmartPlug technology. This is going to provide everything that you're going to need to convert that old system to the new. All these components are made here in the USA. So you can trust they're made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. And we do have several different options that are very similar to this with different colors. So white, isn't going to match your color scheme on your RV. We also have a black, a gray and a stainless steel. The black and gray are exactly the same materials, just a different color. That stainless steel is a metal. So just depending on what's going to match best to your aesthetics on your RV. But this is going to be a really nice system to allow you to convert a cable and switch out your inlet for you. So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
