SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

It’s a quality part but could use some improvements.

First issue was the inlet isolator collar. There isn’t a description in the instructions on how far to strip back the external jacket on the wire. For the plug it was detailed. Strip this much off the wires, and this much off the jacket, and tighten the collar this much. Super easy. For the inlet wire, they only say how much to strip off the wires. No mention of how much off the jacket, and no instructions on how much to tighten the collar. This lead to a short because I stripped enough off the jacket to still be under the collar, but it was a pain to finagle the ground wire to be in the right spot. What I couldn’t see was when I tightened down the collar, it compressed the ground wire through the insulation on the hot wire. I couldn’t see this and wouldn’t know I tightened it too much because of the lack of clarity.

Second issue is the lack of a right angle on the plug. Like all Azdel sided campers, you only get so many chances to tighten the inlet before you strip out the holes. Because of the insane amount of weight and pressure from the 50 amp plug running straight out it pulled the top screws through the wall after being plugged in for a minute or so. There is just too much strain on the inlet from the weight of the wire to avoid this. This whole issue lead to me having to get threaded inserts, new screws and epoxy to the secure the threaded inserts. This wouldn’t be an issue with a right angle plug and shouldn’t be a concern spending $300 on an inlet and plug adapter.

Overall now that it’s finished I like the plug. I’d begrudgingly replace it with a right angle adapter if they ever came out with one as I’m worried still about the strain on the inlet long term.

My RV repair tech replaced on camper and put connector on shore line power cord.
Told me it was nowhere near as easy as videos showed.
Then stated it is a ton better plug then old style
by:
While the plug is a great idea it was very difficult to assemble. Especially when it came time to mate the cover to plate, it needed to be squeezed together due to the rubber grommet and made it very to put in the screws. Secondly the lugs to clamp down on the wire on the trailer are weak and the wrench slips inside of the lug. I wound stripping one and had to drill it out. I use a lug from the old existing plug to complete project.

Since we have installed this, nearly a year ago, we've enjoyed confident connections on our 50A service. I highly recommend this plug over the traditional twist-lock plugs- both as an owner, and an RV technician that sees way too many issues with traditional RV electrical equipment.

This is an awesome product, great assembly. Had issue with twist-lock so I thought I would try this product.
Good instructions (really small print). Easy install, very happy with the outcome. Would purchase again if ever needed. I expect this to last as long as the trailer. If you have issues with your twist lock, I believe you will be really happy with this plug assembly.

As Smokey the Bear says, "Only you can prevent RV fires." Ok, so really Kate from etrailer said that. I am glad to see you went with the SmartPlug! Their product really is superior to the other ones out there, and can do a great job in preventing RV fires. What trip did you enjoy most this year?

@KateF I think Whitmore Overlook, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, 70 miles off pavement to get there. But the year is not over, have a month long trip planned for September, weather and fires permititng Biill.

Definitely a much better connection and the installation wasn’t too bad. I feel much better about my shore power now.
by:
After watching several videos and its easy installation we decided to purchase the SmartPlug. The install was easy and now I don’t have to fight that plastic ring to tighten down the plug. 4 heavy duty terminals make for better connection and metal clips hold the plug securely in place. Just simply press them in for an easy release. Don’t be scared of it.
by:
Great upgrade to my T@b 320. Will not have to worry about stripping the plug ever again.
by:
The power adapter is awesome once I got it installed. It is easy to plug in and unplug. My wife always hated the plastic screw ring on the old plug. It wanted to cross thread all the time. Is it worth the money? I think so. My wife does lots of traveling by herself and this gives me peace of mind that one of the potential fire problems is now gone. We replaced the old plug because it started to melt at the hot terminal. Turns out the trailer side wire terminals were never tightened. My experience wasn’t all roses though. The order was shipped via USPS and got lost for a couple of days. When it did arrive, the new plug was missing one of the set screws. I had waste time going to the orange box store to get the needed set screws. Etrailer is not directly responsible for either issue, although they could probably stop using the postal service. The other part I ordered was lost even longer and showed up almost a week later.

Overall I am happy with the SmartPlug. If I ever get a different RV, this will be one of the first upgrades.

Unit is well made BUT does not fit into most Airstream trailer models (too deep) should include a notice to that effect. Had to leave off the back-end cover to make it fit...and it was tight

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience William. Glad hear the Smart plug is good quality and I can definitely understand your frustration with the fitment. The SmartPlug is designed to replace many standard 30-amp inlets but the deeper housing can make it a tight fit on some Airstream models. I really appreciate you calling that out, as it's the kind of detail that can help other Airstream owners before they start their installation. which year and model Airstream are you installing this on? We'd like to know so we can better assist those with similar setups.

This was a great replacement for my RV power reel. The power reel slip rings were starting to fail. Never liked the system from day one so when I found this power inlet and connector I figured this would be a great replacement. No more slip rings! Seems well made. Easy to install. Instructions were clear and accurate.

Looks great, Allen! Killed with this install. Now that it's all ready to go, where is the next destination with the RV?

Shipping was fast.
etrailer team keep you informed all the way.

Installation was straightforward, remove old socket installed new one, cutoff couple inches of original connector and install the new one.

Everything is working fine.

Installation is pretty straightforward. One thing to note is that installing the connector to your existing power cord is more difficult than it appears. I used foaming hand soap but it is too diluted. Watched a video of a person showing the installation process that they used and it worked! Instead of holding the connector with one hand and the cord in another to push the two together, I placed the connector on a solid surface, used liquid soap, and a grippy glove and was able to shove the cord through the strain relief rubber fitting. Once I was able to do that, it made all the difference.

Also, my original inlet had a round template with three screws holding it to the RV. The SmartPlug inlet is rectangular and has four screws holding it to the RV. I obviously had to drill new holes, but I went to the hardware store and purchased four #8 x 1” 32 stainless steel screws and nylon lock nuts to secure the inlet plug. My trailer is fiberglass, so I will also place a bead of caulking around the top and sides of the the inlet template to ensure a water tight connection.

Thanks for the tip, Mike! I've messed with a few of these and getting that cord through is definitely a pain, so this is very good to know! ^___^ What kind of trailer did you install this on?
