SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Video Transcript for Review of SmartPlug RV Power Cord - 30 Foot 30 Amp Power Cord - SM59FR

Hi there I'm Michael with each trailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this SmartPlug 30-Foot, 30 Amp RV Power Cord. This 30-foot long RV power cord allows you to plug in your RV to a power receptacle. If you already have a SmartPlug inlet on your RV, this will allow you to take full advantage of that PowerSmart inlet to optimize all of your benefits of SmartPlug technology. We'll start on this male plug side. So this is going to connect to your 30 amp outlet at your electrical box.

Pretty much standard fitting there. It's got nickel plated brass electrical pins. So it's going to give it a nice solid connection. When we plug it in, pretty much standard. We'll work with adapters.

And then when we're ready to unplug it, it's got this fold-up 90 degree handle here on the backside, so we can fold that up and then wrap a couple of fingers around it. Makes it a little bit easier to pull out, so very easy to maneuver that male side. When we get it plugged in to our Sure Power. On the female side, we're going to have this blue LED power indicator. That's going to confirm that we are hooked up to power.

Our female plug will connect to your 30 amp SmartPlug inlet on your RV. It does have that unique design. So we're going to be able to fit it even in the dark. You're not going to have to worry about winding up that L pin, like on typical connectors. So you just slide it in like that.

And then those locking tabs will drop hold, and make sure that it's going to stay in place. Because this is a straight fit, we don't have to do any twisting to get it put in place. And those pins are going to having a 20 times greater surface area connection. So it's going to create a much more consistent pin contact point. So our connections are going to be a lot more secure, and more resistant to heat buildup and that sort of thing. But our Marine Grade 316 stainless steel side-locking levers are going to lock in place there to make sure that that weight of the cord, and if we we're to trip on the cord, that sort of thing, that pressure is not going to be put on the pins on the inside. It's got that housing to keep that all intact and then our lid or our inlet is going to fit right on top. You can see we've got a little slot there, where our tab from our lid is going to lock in place. So, it's going to provide an extra connection point there to make sure that it's all nice and secure for us. We do also have triple weatherproof seals that are going to prevent water corrosion from getting in there. So it's going to be nice and weather resistant for us to make sure that those connections are going to be nice and secure. This is a 30-foot long, 30 amp cord. That's capable of 125 volts. So make sure that that's going to work for your system. This is a black Valex 5, 153U resin plastic out here. So it's going to be resistant to heat and UV. So it should hold up really well for you. And this is going to be a really great option for those of you who already have that 30 amp outlet on your RV. If you don't already have an outlet like this, you can get this whole set up here @etrailer.com, using that part number that you see on the screen there. But the cable itself does not come with that inlet. So this is just going to be for the 30-foot, 30 amp power cable, for those of you who already have that inlet. This is made here in the USA. So you can trust, it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US, and I'm really impressed with that SmartPlug technology. I think that's going to be a really nice option for those of you who already have it, and you're wanting to get a power cable, so that you can get hooked up. I think that all the benefits are going to be intact there, so that you've got a nice secure connection. So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

I purchased Smartplug RV power cord and inlet to use with my race trailer and I really like it. The quality is great, and the technology is fantastic. The plug is so much better than the old RV twist plugs. The only downside is the cost. What I really like is the customer service from etrailer is fantastic!

by:

Probably the best RV/Marine Power Cord/Inlet on the market. Good solid electrical connection with no worries about loose connection. This is the second RV that I converted. First modification I make on a new RV, even if I brought a brand new RV would be to make this modification!!!

by:

We chose to change to this product because the "pull out" shore power line that came with our RV got hung up inside the compartment and took considerable work to get out. The SmartPlug system was an easy install and the stainless steel inlet is very high quality. I really like the led indicator lights that confirm the incoming power is properly wired. The power cord has quality plugs and securely attaches to the RV.

I replaced by 2010 Airstream's inlet and cord with the SmartPlug. Installation was simple and took only a few minutes with simple tools. I enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that fire risk has been diminished. Highly recommend this product.
