Hello, neighbors. I'm Steve here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at the Replacement Key for your Thule Rack Board Carriers, specifically key number N2872. Now, how do you know which key you need Well, it's actually quite simple. Simply go to your carrier or your rack, look at the lock core, and, right next to where the key inserts, you should see a number engraved on that core face. That's the key number you're looking for.

Then just come to our website, etrailer.com, type in that number, and you should bring up that key number. Now zooming in here, you can see that engraving, 2872, right above my etrailer sticker. I had lost the key to my Sears rooftop cargo carrier on a recent trip. I read that Thule had manufactured the Sears-branded carriers and so the same lock code should apply. The most important thing I can write is: the replacement keys work!

After doing the research to find new keys for our Sears 20-SV cargo carrier, we bought the set from etrailer that matched the lock number because the people running the site seemed to say they would work in the lock and you can’t get them from Sears anymore. THEY DO NOT WORK. Looks like we’ll be adding an external hasp and padlock to our carrier.

Thule tells us that the replacement keys are a tiny fraction of an inch shorter than the originals, so on the Sears 20-SV boxes, its sometimes necessary to seat the key a little deeper in the lock cylinder to get the key to link up correctly with the tumblers. Giving the end of the key a rap with a mallet not a hammer will fully seat the key. You should only need to do this once.

Went on vacation 9 hours from home and left key home and no house sitter or anyone to mail it.
Tried local trailer stores and locksmiths to no avail, was able to get a locksmith to open it and than ordered a replacement from etrailer and they shipped it the same day and was received three days later with regular shipping.

I have a sportrack, that attaches to my SUV roof rack, I lost the key so I decide to order this key on line after doing numerous research but the key ended up didn't open my roof rack so it's a waste of money and xxpensive, I ended up drilling the lock out to open it.

I was very happy with the responsiveness of etrailer.com representatives. We realized that our cargo carrier keys were missing a few days before my husband and son were going to head out on a fishing and camping trip. The Sears Cargo Carriers were manufactured by Thule and they offer replacement keys based on the reference number on the existing lock mechanism. If you can tell me the numbers stamped into the face of the lock, I can use those numbers to locate the correct replacement key for you. Your best chance is replacement key # THKEYN2854. The lock on your cargo box is similar if not the same on many older Thule-made cargo boxes so if anything is going to work it will be this key. If the key goes in but does not turn then the issue could actually be that the key is not fully seated. This is common with new keys and old locks and the solution is to simply tap the key in lightly with a mallet.
