Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a quick look at this GE Appliances 13,500 BTU Black High-Efficiency, Low-Profile, Ductless RV Air Conditioning System With Heat Pump. Now this low-profile RV air conditioner is designed to give you an additional three inches of clearance in roof height, and this 13,500 BTU unit will do a great job of cooling down your medium-to-large travel trailers, your class C motor homes and your standard fifth wheels, and this is going to give you a refreshing escape in spaces upwards of 200 to 300 square feet. This is designed to handle harsh road conditions all from a brand name that you know and trust. Now this does use the more energy-efficient R32 refrigerant, which does meet the 2025 EPA regulations.
So because of that, this unit will now be backwards compatible with any air conditioning system from 2024 and earlier, so that's why getting this system is good because everything is going to be compatible with one another. So this will be a bolt-on installation with the included hardware that you see here. And let me go ahead and give you some measurements here. So looking at the length first, looking from like the front to the back, just end to end overall about 40 inches, the overall width is going to be at 30 inches, and the overall height is gonna be right at 11 inches, and this weighs about 86 pounds or so. And so this is a high-efficiency unit, so this has high-efficiency cooling performance, and what that's going to do for you is maintain consistent airflow and temperature control with reduced energy consumption.
This is gonna run quietly because the motor has sound-dampening grommets to help reduce annoying humming, and this is gonna be a pretty easy swap for most RVs because this is going to seamlessly install over your roof's pre-existing roof vent opening, and, again, this is built tough for the road because it is constructed of high-grade materials that are designed to withstand extreme UV rays and that constant vibration. This black, hard, automotive-grade polymer shroud is going to do a great job of protecting those internal components from water, dirt, and debris. As you can see, (solid knocking) this is a hard shroud, so I think it's gonna hold up really well for you, and it's got a great gloss to it as well, so I think it's gonna look great for a long time to come. It can be easily removed if you need to do any cleaning or maintenance and easily replaced, and, as I mentioned, this does have a built-in heat pump, and that's gonna help keep your RV or camper warm, especially on those chilly mornings. This is going to efficiently use the heat in the air to warm down the inside of your coach on days as cold as 25 degrees Fahrenheit, and then at 35 degrees Fahrenheit this has the ability to extend your propane supply anywhere from about 19 to 38% by reducing the need to run your furnace, and then when conditions do get too cold for the heat pump to run efficiently, it will automatically switch over to your furnace.
And then this also does have an auto-defrost cycle that's gonna help prevent ice buildup on the heat exchanger. Now let's take a closer look at this side of the table and briefly take a look at the components here. This does, of course, come with our air distribution box that's designed specifically for your ductless systems. If you have no other ductwork in your RV, this is going to be what you need because all of the air will come out of this air distribution box. Of course, this is also designed to handle road vibrations in everyday RV life, and then you're also going to get this single-zone thermostat, and, if you notice, it does include easy-to-use large buttons.
We also have a large display here that's gonna be backlit, and this is gonna be a easy install with the hardware that's included with it. And then we do have our fireproof control box. This is basically the brains of the operation. This is going to manage how your AC operates. And let me give you some measurements going back to our air distribution box. Looking at the width and the length, we're sitting right at 21 inches, and this is going to be coming down from your ceiling about 2, 2-1/2 inches or so. Our thermostat is going to be 3-1/2 inches wide and tall. It's about an inch thick. And then our control box is about 7-1/2 inches long and 6-7/8 inches wide and about 2-3/8 inches thick, and, if I didn't mention, hardware is included to get that installed as well. So everything that you see here is included, and it all comes from a brand name that you know and trust, GE Appliances, well-known for their residential appliances, so that same trust and reliability is going to be coming with this RV air conditioning system. I have no issue with the GE RV AC/heat pump unit I purchased but have yet to use it operationally. Purchase and shipment was easy and on time as well as the information provided by the assistant substituting the GE for the previous Colemen unit. Three issues: One is the instruction manual which is very hard to follow and does not address some items needed within the install process. The electrical box is 6"x6 5/8" the opening is 6"x6". I am not sure if this is a design flaw but needs to be addressed. When contacting the tech for support I was told I needed to tilt the box to get it to fit above the bracket (no easy feat). The instruction manual addresses the thermostat replacement but does not address installation of a new thermostat; I again had to contact a tech to be told I needed to install a thermostat wire and how to install it. The videos I found does not address either of these issues but the electric box appears to be installed without the tilt method.
I would say I'm disappointed for several reasons. First and foremost the installation instructions are terrible, very vague. Next, this application was for an Airstream trailer that has a 2" thick roof. The Air conditioner is designed to cover a range of roof thicknesses from 2-6", what they don't tell you is that the air conditioner has to be modified for 2-3" roofs. For instance one of the long mounting bolts will run right into the fan shaft and damage the shaft, so it needs to cut shorter. 2nd, the baffle between the two air chambers on the mounting plate needs to be modified also, otherwise it pushes into the styrofoam of the air conditioning unit and causes deflection of the mounting plate and pushes the styrofoam into the squirrel cage fan. So I needed to cut almost a full inch off the baffle plate. After talking to tech support they said they make a diffirent plate for thinner roofs. Nothing in the instructions about that or from the seller. Also not included in the instructions is that you need to use foil tape to close all gaps in the baffle between the two air chambers. One more thing, the instructions say you need to remove the EPP Evaporator cover to access connection wires, nothing again in the instruction or diagrams showing what this is or how to remove it. I had to search on the internet to find out what this part was. I will have to say tech support was helpful, but seriously, why is this information not included in the instructions and accessory parts for thinner roofs not included?
