Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Nissan Murano - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2009 Nissan Murano we will be installing the Draw-Tite trailer hitch, part number 75647. I'll give you a couple of measurements to help you pick out accessories, like wall mounts, cargo carriers, and bike racks. From the top of the receive tube to the ground, there is about 12 3/4 inches, and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of the bumper is about 5 1/2 inches. Now, let's go see how it's installed. To begin the installation, we'll start by removing the three exhaust hangers at the rear of the vehicle. Now to remove the hangers, the first thing we will need to do, spray them down with some spray lubricant. With those sprayed down, we can take a pry bar and pop the exhaust hanger out of place.

Now that the exhaust is loose, we have to remove this rear tow hook, and to remove that we have four bolts that we'll need to remove. Those two and these two bolts up here. Now that everything is out of the way, I'll go and show you the attachment points for the hitch. This hole here, closer to the exhaust, there, the one on the back by the exhaust hanger. Now the mounting points on the passenger side are just a little bit different. We will have two on this vehicle.

Well, this one in the front, nearest to the exhaust, and this other well nut back here by the exhaust hanger. Now before mounting our hitch, we're going to go back to those mounting holes, spray some spray lubricant in there and clean them out. We'll use a tube brush. This is also available on our website. It is part number 814092. Once we clear that one of all the dirt and debris and road grime that might be built up on those threads, well continue to the other four mounting locations and we'll repeat that process. Now with that cleaned out, we'll check our threads.

Make sure the bolt goes in easily, and doesn't catch or cross thread. That one looks good. So we'll continue to the other four and repeat that process. This is the hardware we will be using to install our hitch. Its the bolt and a conical tooth washer.

When we put the washer in place, we want to make sure that these teeth face up towards the hitch. We'll use that for four of our mounting locations. On the fifth mounting location, which is the one closest to the driver side, we'll use the smaller bolt and the smaller conical tooth washer. The same process, just make sure the teeth on the washer face up towards the hitch. Now, before we put our hitch into place, we'll have to remove these two push fasteners, and allow our rear facer to swing out a little bit, to gain clearance. Now to remove the fasteners, take a flathead screwdriver, slide the center pin out, and the fastener releases. All right, this one helps to have extra set of hands to help lift the hitch in place. We'll start over on the passenger side. We'll lift the bracket up above the exhaust. Now, this mounting location right here is the one where we're going to use that smaller bolt. Now that the hitch is in place and the hardware is then hand tightened, we'll go ahead and take our impact wrench and tighten it down. Now with all the bolts tightened down, we need to torque them to the recommended amount in the instructions. Now that we have the hitch on the car, and torqued to the recommended specifications, we need to re-secure our exhaust hangers. Now, we'll go back to the rear valance taps where we removed the push pin fasteners earlier, we'll use a zip tie included with the hitch to secure those taps in place. Now the zip tied in place, go ahead and cut off the excess. And that concludes today's installation of the Draw-Tite trailer hitch, part number 75647 on our 2009 Nissan Murano. .

I had the this hitch mailed expedited to my son's house in SLC, UT as I needed much more cargo space than I had anticipated before I left. It arrived exactly on the day they said it would. I called U-Haul and they quoted me $378 for the hitch. My son told me about etrailer and I ended up spending way less than half.

It took me a couple of hours to install the hitch mostly due to the difficulty of getting the rubber supports off in order to lower the exhaust. The video made it look much easier than it really was. I couldn't get enough leverage to get them off laying on my back underneath the vehicle even after applying lubricant so I purchased a medium size pry bar and was able to reach that up behind to leverage them off finally. Once I got past that issue, the rest was easy. No problem.

Drove down to Phoenix with the cargo carrier fully loaded, then back to Virginia ...a total of about 3,000 miles. I had 3 large boxes loaded with stuff that I estimated weighed about 300 lbs total. At times I forgot it was back there. We are now using the hitch almost daily to carry our bikes which is a nice plus. I recommend this company and product to anyone needing one.

by:

Installation was just as easy as explained, I don't even have a jack for my car and still made it all work, alone. It has been on there for one year now with no moving, budging or worries. We have our two-bike rack on there pretty much full time and are using that daily since time of installation.
Other use was to haul a covered trailer from Utah to Minnesota. It was a 5x8 single axle trailer that we had a motorcycle in, lifting weights, tool bench, two mountain bikes and an array of other things, approx 1200 lbs or so. No problems and no worries. Also drove to Utah with the bike rack and mountain bikes.
All in all, solid rack, solid deal.
Thanks!

A year later the hitch is fine. It has pulled our camper a few miles with no problems. Thanks for following up on this.

Shipping was great and easy to install complete instructions on how to install. I needed fast shipping and it was shipped that day. You are the best.

After having ordered and got the hitch installed, I couldn’t be more satisfied with it. Not only is serving the purpose for what I bought it, but the design and quality of it is good that couple of people have asked me if I got a oem from the car manufacturer. Thanks so much for making these hitches available!

It has been a year since I purchased and got my hitch installed on my Nissan Murano, and I’m so grateful that I have it now. First of all, the hitch looks like it was originally from the car manufacturer. It’s tucked away underneath the rear bumper, and I’ve been able to use my bicycle rack with no issues at all. I’m completely satisfied with the quality and workmanship. The powder coating still shines looking brand new. Thank you for your great product.

I ordered a Draw Tite trailer hitch for my Nissan Murano. Fast, free delivery. Good value. Easy to install. Now I just have to buy a boat to pull around. Thanks etrailer.com You made it easier for me to go fishing.

Hitch came well packed, finish could have been better.
Install was straight forward, everything lined up and looks perfect.
The Hidden Hitch really looks nice on our car!

by:

This hitch fit perfectly. I didn't end up needing to suspend my exhaust like the video suggests. A little bit of wiggling and maneuvering was all it needed. The instructions were clear and easy to understand. I received my order very quickly. This is my second hitch ordered through etrailer. I have had a great experience both times.

That was the second hitch system I had ordered from etrailer. For the second time I was very happy with the service. The product was exactly as expected. All the bolt holes lined up perfectly and the installation video made installing the hitch quick and easy. When my parents were looking for a hitch for their vehicle I steered them to etrailers. Once again the product was shipped fast and installed without issue. I will return to etrailers for all my future trailer hitch needs as well as recommend your site to anyone I meet that is in the market. You guys do a great job.

The trailer hitch we ordered for our Nissan Murano arrived in 3 days, fit perfectly, and because of the fine installation videos for both hitch and harness, all went smoothly, and boat got in the water in time for the scheduled party! We saved money on both the purchase and installation thanks to you! And no sacrifice in quality! We couldn't be happier with the whole process.

Thanks for the follow up Tom. We do offer several anti-rattle hitch pins that you might find helpful in eliminating the noise that you hear when towing your boat. Please see the link below.

The hitch is a great product and etrailer.com is a great seller. Product shipped in the expected time frame. Hitch was very easy to install and the etrailer videos on youtube made it really easy. (I didn't even have to lower the exhaust like in the video). I would recommend this product for anyone in need of a hitch. Used it the day after I installed it and worked great.

Product still looks and works great. Very happy with this purchase after a year of use.

Easy to install, as promised. I've used this hitch a half dozen times since then. It's solid. Especially appreciate the wiring harness hook-up provided by etrailer. The lights work every time and then the harness just stows away. I love this hitch so much I bought one for my Mom as well!

This hitch was truly a blessing! My Mom used it for her bike rack, to transport to the park. Easy to use, and easy to install too. Two months ago, she was driving on the interstate - a vehicle hit her from behind. The hitch took the brunt of the blow, and protected her vehicle from further damage! She was able to continue on her journey! I am sooo thankful for your quality product!! Very well-built. We were blessed!

Installed a trailer hitch on my 2014 Nissan Mirano. Product was as advertised, one problem the holes in the hitch bracket on the drivers side did not line up with the holes on the Mirano, looks like parts weren’t set square when made, was able to get them where they were supposed to go, and did get them bolted up correctly. NOTE for people installing this hitch on this year and model car the exhaust on the car did not rotate down like your [installation] video showed, ended up removing the muffler, wasn’t a big issue but still not what was shone on the video.

so far no problems

by:

Arrived two days early in perfect condition. Perfect fit and easy to install. Anyone with any mechanical background can do it with no problem. Like other reviewers, I was able to install without lowering the muffler. However, without lowering the muffler it's a little difficult to get to the screws started because of type clearance. Not a big deal though. The website video is helpful and very well done, although it neglects to mention that the tow hook bracket must be removed (the written instructions do). The hitch fits perfectly and the only thing visible is the receiver. Low-price, great fit, quick delivery. An overall fantastic buying experience! Don't bother looking anywhere else.

Its working fine. Thanks for the follow-up.

by:

Product was great with the exception that the 3 big screws were too big. I’ve read a review where the guy had the same issue Where he had to rethread the holes. I had no luck getting the screws to fit. I brought it to a friend is a master mechanic. He ran into the same issue. Lucky for me he was able to get screws that fit like a glove. The trailer hitch was sweet and shipment was fast. Loved the video and photos. If the screws where right I would give them five stars. Because it was a pain to try to use the screws provided. But when it was finally on it looked great. Overall very happy. Note no need for ties in my case.

by:

I brought this hitch to install on my 2012 Murano firstly it arrived early and in fact with no carton damage I had install it looks great thanks etrailer for a great hitch

by:

I have a 2014 Nissan Murano and I got the draw tite trailer hitch, looks great. It’s just what I wanted, you can only see just the part where you insert what ever you are using it for. My purpose was a bike rack. The curt one will show under your car, and I didn’t like that.. it was shipped quickly and no damage.

by:

First of all; I live in Buffalo NY. So I have loads of rust in the grooves where bolts for hitch go into. After seeing etrailer video on how to spray lubricant and scrub the holes with brush. I was shocked how much rust came out and how easy it was to get bolts fully tightened. The etrailer video on how to install hitch is flawless. All this took me an hour on the 2012 Nissan Murano. I did drop the muffler. My wiring project is next week. Im very pleased this was a simple process i work 60hrs a week and was not looking forward to this project. Etrailer gets 5

by:

Had planned to get the trailer hitch installed by local shop, but after watching the installation video I decided to do it myself. Easy bolt-on , ....just have to be patient with lowering the exhaust and priming the bolt holes since mine were rusted and bolts just would not go in. After soaking them with penetrating spray and cleaning them out, the bolts went right in.
The installation video was a great help. Product is of high quality.

by:

I'm a repeat customer because my first experience was stellar. Unfortunately, the 2nd time, not so much. The hitch came welded off kilter, so it didn't fit properly. When I called to work out a resolution, the call dropped to busy signal after waiting 5 minutes.....three times. I emailed to complain since they don't man the phones well and have had no response.
After receiving the hitch, I realized I needed a wiring harness I forgot. They took my order/money and shipped it, but I have yet to receive any response to my defective hitch.
Sell, sell, sell, screw the rest!

by:

Great product fast delivery and it fits...but two of the bolts on the right side were too long had to add a couple of washers but that fixed the problem only using it for my bike quick and simple installation will recommend

by:

Draw-Tite is a good hitch have used them over the years. This hitch did not disappoint me. It did come bent a little but tech support gave me tips on straightening it and I got installed really easy. My tip is buy the brush they recommend for cleaning out the bolts holes if you don't have one. It will make your life easier.

The hitch is still like brand new after being installed for a year

by:

This is the 2nd hitch I've bought from etrailer. I can't say enough good things about the company, their website and their customer service. Add to that, having the hitch in stock and super quick delivery makes for a great purchasing experience.
If you own a basic set of sockets and have a little mechanical ability this hitch is a breeze to install. The video lets you see what is involved, but, like others, I did not drop the muffler. Access was still pretty good and I didn't have any problems. All the bolt holes lined up, and, even doing it myself with the aid of a couple of jack stands to hold the hitch in place while I got the bolts started, it took me about 35 minutes, start to finish. Once again, I'm a happy camper.
Thanks, etrailer...

Works as intended and still looks like new!

by:

The Draw-Tite trailer hitch is made of very strong material with a nice coat of paint. The etrailer how-to-install video uses a Curt brand hitch which is designed differently and easier to install compared to the Draw-Tite but the Curt hitch is all exposed directly below the bumper, except where it's bolted to the frame. With the Draw-Tite, a valance supporting the rear bumper guard on the vehicle needs to be removed to accommodate the hitch, up and behind the bumper. The result is a less visible hitch so it doesn't look like an add-on or after-thought. The plan is to attach a cargo carrier to the hitch so there's no need to install a wiring kit for lights as if we were to pull a trailer.

by:

Product arrived on time and with all parts. On first inspection it looked a little off and sure enough one of the holes did not quite line up. But the customer service rep explained how to straighten it out and even sent an email with detailed instructions. Once that was done the install went without any other problems. The video was extremely helpful, but I had read some of the other reviews that I did not need to drop the exhaust so I went that route and had no issues. It's just a little tight sliding the hitch around the exhaust. I didn't even need to jack up the rear, though that may have made the install a little easier. An extra pair of hands is a must, to hold one end up while you attach the other end. Would have been nice to know up front that the hitch could flex in transit and what to do about it, but otherwise a great product and it looks great! From unpacking the box to completing the install took about an hour (not counting the call to customer service!) using only a socket wrench and scissors (to cut the zip ties).

I’ve used the hitch several times now to tow a few different small trailers as well as for a bike rack and tray also purchased through etrailer. All worked as expected. Hitch is showing a small amount of rust where the attachments slide in but this is expected and happened in my previous vehicle - that hitch outlasted the car so very confident in this one!

Thank you for the comment and I'm glad you're getting good use out of your trailer hitch! You can try covering up any rusty spots with rust-resistant paint to help extend the life of your hitch.

  • Diagnosing Trailer Wiring Issues with a Draw-Tite Circuit Tester
It sounds like you're having issues with your trailer lights working but your connector at the vehicle is getting power. You should start with your ground to ensure it has a solid connection to a clean section of your trailers frame or piece of metal if your trailer is aluminum. Make sure there is no corrosion, rust, dirt, or paint between the ground and the attachment point. If your ground is good and you're still having issues I recommend using a circuit tester like item # PTW2992....
