Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a quick look at this Optronics Co27 Trailer Battery Charger with Jumper Harness. Now this is a DC to DC battery charger that's made for trailers and campers that need to keep an auxiliary battery charge while going down the road. So instead of relying on a basic charge line from a tow vehicle, this unit is going to manage the charging process and send control power to the trailer battery while you're driving. So this is going to work with 12 volt lead acid batteries, 24 volt lead acid batteries, and 12.6 volt LiFePO4 lithium batteries. This charger takes a 12 volt input from the tow vehicle and it can provide up to 10 amps of charging current with a continuous output of 130 watts.
One of the more useful features is that this automatically starts charging when the input voltage reaches 13.2 volts. When the voltage drops to 12.8 volts, this is gonna go into standby. That's going to help separate the trailer battery from the tow vehicle battery when the vehicle isn't supplying charging voltage. So you're not using the trailer battery to back feed the vehicle. Standby draw is also very low at less than two milliamps.
The charger uses a three stage charging process with bulk, absorption, and float stages. That means that it can provide stronger charging when the battery needs it, then gradually reduce the charge as the battery fills and finally maintains the battery once it's charged. Another important feature is how this handles limited wiring capacity from the tow vehicle. The charger can accept up to 10 amps of input, but if the vehicle wiring can't provide that much current, the charger's going to automatically reduce its output instead of trying to pull more power than the circuit can supply. That can be especially helpful on trailers where the factory charge circuit or existing wiring is limited.
There's also a multicolor LED on this charger right here. That's going to show the selected battery type and the current charging status. It's going to give you a quick way to see what the unit is doing. This included jumper harness is gonna be another practical benefit, because the connection harness comes with a charger, rather than needing to be sourced separately. The recommended fuse size is gonna be 20 amps on both the input and output sides.
And then let me go ahead and give you some overall measurements. Once I get this disconnected here, you can see this has a good, solid connection there. Retrieving my ruler, looking at the overall width and I'm including where that wiring harness is going to plug in. So at the widest point we're sitting pretty close to 4 3/4 inches wide. The height, about 5 3/4 inches tall. And then the depth or thickness, about 2 1/4 inches. So this charger is probably going to be most useful for those who regularly tow a travel trailer, camper, or other trailer with an onboard battery, and wants that battery receiving a managed charge during the drive. This can be particularly useful when the trailer is running loads during travel or when you want to arrive with more available battery capacity.
