BOLT Locks for Convenience and Security

Are you tired of carrying a bulky ring of keys - for your hitch lock and coupler lock, your pickup cover or trailer door, and all the various padlocks securing your equipment? Tired of fumbling for the right key or having to replace a lost key?

BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology) has solved that problem by designing a line of locks that can operate with a key you already have handy - your vehicle ignition key.

When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position.

BOLT is particularly useful in commercial applications. Imagine being able to send a crew without having to sign out multiple keys for a work truck, trailer, hitch pins, and equipment locks. With BOLT, the vehicle key becomes a master key. It opens all those locks and you no longer have the hassle of getting to a work site only to find that you've brought the wrong keys.

Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the BOLT Covered Padlock

Hello neighbors and friends, Steven here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at our Bolt covered padlock for a two inch shackle and it's gonna code to a Ford Center cut key. So folks, just like I said, this is made to fit a Ford Center Cut key, typically something like the ones imaged here on the screen. Now I can tell you this fits roughly the 2021 through the current Ford trucks, but I also want you to make sure that you're checking our fit guide. Check the fit guide here on the product page as well. Make sure you see your year, make and model on there to be sure it fits.

Now these are a one time code lock, meaning once you put that key in there, it's gonna permanently code it to only one vehicle. You can never recode it, re-key it. A locksmith can't do it either. It's just the way the technology is and that's to keep it specifically coded to your key and your key alone. Now it is a nice heavy duty padlock and I can tell you I'm actually kind of impressed with how heavy it really is as far as just the weight.

I'd say it's pretty much close to a pad, believe it or not. And as you can see, it's not too big. It's about four and a half inches tall, give or take. It's two inches on the shackle length here and it's 5/16 inch thick on the rod itself or the the shackle itself. Now you could use this for something like securing equipment to your rack on the truck bed to prevent people from stealing it.

Maybe a job box, toolbox, depending on the style you have, putting the cable through something and locking the cable, protect camping gear when you're away from the camp. And again, this uses the vehicle's ignition key, so you always have the right key with you and it eliminates you having to have extra keys on your keying as well. So you've never heard of Bolt technology or never seen them. Pretty simple. I'm gonna leave this on here.

But basically that sticker is basically saying, hey, once you put this key in, it's coded to your vehicle. And again, it only works with those Ford Center Cut keys. So you simply, when you get this out of the box, you'll pull that key out of your key fob, you'll insert it and unlock it and boom, just like that. It's already keyed to your key and it's ready to go. Don't ask me how the technology works. I am not a professional (laughs) as far as locks go, but that's how it works. I'm pretty impressed with this brand. They've been around for years. They also sell hitch locks that you can key to your vehicle key and many, many more. So I recommend you checking out the whole line of the Bolt technology. It's pretty impressive. Now, it does have inside a six plate tumbler sidebar that's gonna prevent lock picking or bumping the lock to get it undone, such as hitting it with a hammer or something. And it is an automotive quality lock. It's very durable. Like I mentioned, it's weatherproof, the stainless steel lock mechanism itself that's protected behind this nice plastic coating and everything. It's gonna keep out dirt, moisture, debris, and it's got a nice durable, easy to grip, hard rubber casing around it to also protect it and make it a lot more ergonomic to pick up and stuff. Now it is chrome plate at hardened steel on the shackle itself and it is crust resistant on the body itself. So they've tested this, you know, to a certain amount to smash and break it, and it's way above what the physical human could do without lots and lots of heavy duty equipment. So folks, again, I'm Steven. I wanna thank you so much for looking at this Bolt covered padlock with me today. Again, code to the Ford Center Cut keys. And again, that's roughly the year 2021 through current Ford Trucks. Again, check our fit guide, make sure it fits your vehicle. Have a good one.

I have multiples of these for locking various cables and hitches to my vehicle. It is the best thing since sliced bread. It keeps my key bring down to just a couple of keys instead of 7 or 8 different lock keys for various locks. You can also pick them up in a shackle style lock as well.

Great product, love having all locks on the same key. ETrailer delivered right on time.

by:

The lock rusted more than I thought it should for the price I paid.

Love this padlock. Keyed it for my Toyota Tundra. I also have several of the BOLT hitch pins lock and a BOLT reciever lock. Very convenient to use your ignition key for these. Better yet, have a cheap, non-chipped copy of your ignition key and keep it on a different keychain and use it for your locks, to open your vehicle doors and tailgate, etc. even while your ignition key is in the ignition. When you have a non-chipped key copy, be sure to NOT try the non-chipped key in your ignition as it will not start the vehicle and will disable it if you try it a few times. But non-chipped key copies are a enconomical (a few dollars to have some made) and besides using the for these locks, your tailgate and doors, you can also hide a copy on your vehicle to unlock your doors if you lock your chipped keys in the passenger compartment.

These are nice locks. 2 Years in and the lock mechanisms still operate smoothly. Use these for hitch lock, toy hauler ramp door locks, receiver pin lock, and cable lock for my surge protector. It's very nice having all the locks keyed the same. And since it's keyed to my towing vehicle key I never have to worry about forgetting the keys. I always have the right key when pulling with my truck!

by:

using this on my trailer ball hitch. Shaft is not to big and the length of the shaft is good. Easy to set up with my truck key.

by:

It's a great, quality lock. Spends most of its time on the back of my trailer keeping my ramps where I left them. Opens easily with my truck key.

Saves me keys and key finding and frust ration

by:

Easy peasy. I’ve got a 2022 3500 HD Silverado with the key that pulls out of the remote. Stuck it in the locks, turned clockwise and done! I checked out these locks on Amazon and each part number said it wouldn’t fit my truck. I knew if I bought them from e-trailer and had a problem, I would get the customer service that I needed. The price difference was negligible ( Amazon was $2 more) and shipping was free over $100. No contest! Oh, I had emails through the whole process telling me where everything was at, and an email that said it was delivered! Can we say great customer service!

I have used the Bolt lock system for about 3 years. I ordered the first ones directly from the manufacturer. I have the padlocks and a j bolt for securing our TT hitch. I needed more padlocks and found they were now available through distributors. I chose to use etrailer because they have an excellent reputation for a large inventory and especially service. I really like the Bolt system because I can key them to my truck key and the quality of the products.

by:

I love BOLT locks, the only locks I use for trailering. I have the padlocks for trailer doors; then I also use hitch and coupler pin locks from BOLT.

I truly value using my truck key for locks rather than having 3+ sets of keys for individual sets of locks!

Marking this a 4 (vs. 5) star because the padlocks can be a bit finicky when trying to close them; this is nothing Earth-shattering, but there is always room for improvement.

Great product eliminates having unnecessary keys on ur key ring

by:

All three items I ordered - are exactly what I expected (padlock, hitch receiver lock, and coil cable lock). I had these same products for a truck I recently sold, and immediately ordered them when I purchased my newer truck! The ease and simplicity of your ignition key to work on these locks is brilliant! What a concept!
These locks are durable - reliable - and I’d even say a “necessity” for whatever type truck you own. I have never had any kind of problem or issue with the BOLT locks - high quality workmanship!
Never worry about your trailer ball mount being stolen, and you will see the cable and padlock have “endless” uses for securing items on or off your truck! You won’t be disappointed with your purchase…..

by:

I have seven locks I use in my Jeep, trailer hitch and Turtleback trailer. One in my Jeep I use to secure a lock box for a Glock; two-four secure my max-coupler articulating hitch; and five-seven are on my overland trailer (Turtleback Getaway).

Obviously all are keyed to my Rubicon fob.

Convenient, heavy duty locks.
