Does Check Valve in 1999 Dodge Dakota Transmission Lines have to be Removed to Install Cooler

Question:

I plan on installing an external cooler on my 1999 5.2 V8 dodge dakota, it uses a never rebuit 46re and my question concerns the check valve lots of people say should be removed because it could block the lines. Can I check the flow of fluid in the lines by disconnecting the return line end at the transmission, plug it to a platic hose and let the engine run for a few seconds? If the flow is good no need to remove the valve? Thanks for any input.

I would not advise testing the flow of the transmission fluid in this manner because it could drop the pressure in the lines which could cause issues with the transmission. It would be better to have a more controlled situation by having a transmission shop monitor the flow and pressure in the lines. They would have the necessary equipment to more accurately and safely test it.

This is the first time I have heard of this issue. It seems to me that a better solution might be to use larger hose, obtained locally, than what is included with the cooler # D13504. Also, fitting # D13030 is recommended for your 1999 Dodge Dakota with 5.2 liter motor. This is to avoid having to cut and flare lines.
