Updated 06/06/2025 | Published 06/01/2025

Question:

I’m setting up our 2001 Miata for flat towing. We currently have a Blue Ox tow bar that we use with our Jeep and would like to use it to tow Miata, if we can find the correct ends. We need wiring pkg as well including charging

Hello Eric, thanks for reaching out. We actually do offer a Blue Ox Base Plate for the 2001 Mazda Miata. We can provide that, along with the rest of the parts needed to complete your flat tow setup. Here is what I recommend:

- Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Fixed Arms # BX2514

- Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables - 7,500 lbs - Qty 2 # BX88196 (only if you don't already have them)

- Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord # RM-15267

- Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25

- Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Flat Tow Brake System for RVs w/ Hydraulic Brakes - Proportional # SM99251

That will cover all the main components. You may need a drop hitch to compensate for any height differences between the base plate arms and the hitch on your RV. Any difference of more than 3" requires a drop hitch like part # BLU28XR.

I have linked a few videos below that you should find useful.

Do you plan to install this yourself? Or are you looking for an installer? Reply on this page.

Thank you! We would like to be able to remove as much of the tow bar as possible when we aren’t towing. Is there a better choice for that?

@ErikT That is the only base plate Blue Ox makes for the 2001 Miata. Sadly there is not an option with removeable arms. Roadmaster does make a base plate for the 2001 Miata that does have removable arms, part # 711-4, but this would not be directly compatible with your Blue Ox tow bar. You would need to use the Blue Ox Tow Bar Adapter Bracket for Roadmaster Standard and Crossbar-Style Base Plates # BX88178 to adapt it to your tow bar. So it can be done, but not exactly the most cost effective approach. Also, that Adapter bracket bolts on to the base plate arms and the whole assembly can be a bit cumbersome. I try to avoid these crossbar style base plates if possible. If you want to be able to remove the base plate arms, that will be the only option.

@JesseM Thanks for the follow up. The ends on our BlueOx tow bar are set for a Jeep so we would have to change ends every time we swapped two vehicles. Can you. Price the roadmaster base plate with a roadmaster tow bar? Also include the two wiring options. Thanks

@@erikt The Blue Ox Tow Bar ends should work with any Blue Ox base plate. They would not be vehicle specific. Unless your tow bar ends are for the D-rings on a Jeep bumper, you would not need to swap them out. If you do decide to go the Roadmaster Approach, here is what I recommend: - Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # 711-4 - etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plates - RV Mount - 6,000 lbs # e44ZR - Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord # RM-15267 - Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25 - Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Flat Tow Brake System for RVs w/ Hydraulic Brakes - Proportional # SM99251
