What Would Cause Roadmaster Even Brake to Leak Air

Updated 02/24/2025 | Published 02/17/2025

Question:

I have a roadmaster even brake that I’ve been using for years, but I’ve always felt it hasn’t been accurate. I replaced a transmitter with a new one because the signal I’m getting at the monitor on the dash gives me false readings, that didn’t help. now after the compressor turns off, and I go to do a test in the tow vehicle all the air is exhausted out leaking somewhere. There is a major leak somewhere in the cylinder or line area. My question is, is this unit worth fixing because they are very expensive to replace or what options do I have? I have a 43 foot diesel pusher motorhome towing a full-size crew cab Chevrolet. I am looking to purchase a Colorado as a new tow vehicle. Thank you

Hey Kevin, if you were looking for an excuse to upgrade to a newer braking system like the Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR now would be a great time...but typically if the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Supplemental Braking System # RM-9400 is having a leakage issue it's either the Air Cylinder # RM-452109-10 or the exhaust valve # RM-450601-50, with the exhaust valve usually being the number one culprit.

I recommend checking the exhaust valve with some soapy water and seeing if you get any bubbles and we can go from there.

I will do that tomorrow. Also, when I look up the even brake by application “2025 Colorado” on your web sight, it says does not fit that application. Is that correct? Thanks for your response Jameson.

@Kevin Great observation but due to it's universal design I don't see why it wouldn't carry over to a 25' model.

Good morning Jameson. I finally took cover off my even brake to see where air was exhausting when i pressed test button. The valve that is connected to cylinder I assume is quick exhaust valve you recommended I check. So, when I press test button air is released out open exhaust port and cylinder moves very little even when not connected to brake pedal and test it on work bench. Before I just throw parts at it please advise me. Thank you, Kevin Carroll

@Kevin I just heard back from Roadmaster and they said it sounds like the exhaust port part # RM-450601-50 is what you need.
