Recommended Larger Wheels and Tires for EZ Loader Trailer with 4.80-12 Tires

Updated 01/21/2022 | Published 01/19/2022

Question:

I have a EZ Loader galvanized boat trailer with stock 4.80-12 tires, 5 lugs on a 4-1/2. These tires seem very small and light duty. Could you recommend a galvanized tire/wheel in a larger size that I could upgrade to?

The best upgraded tire size option for your trailer will come down to how much space you have avavailbe. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel part # AM31952 measures 24.1" diameter x 7". A 4.80-12 measures 20.5" diameter x 4.8" wide so you need to account for another 3.6" diameter and 2.2" width. The diameter is halved but you will want to measure from the top of the tire to the bottom of fender and then from inside of tire to outside of frame. You'll need a few inches of clearance on top of the tire to allow for suspension travel and about 1" on the inside.

If you don't have enough space you should be able to get away with just a 5.30-12 like the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire part # TT53012C.
