How Much Can the Bumper Tow on a 2001 Ford Expedition

Question:

Hello, I just bought a used Ford Expedition Eddie Baur 2001 and there is a hole at rear bumper. The person who sold it, told me I could only install a 2 in ball to tow my 12x6 trailer, instead of installing a hitch Trailer turning/maneuvering is not complicated due to trailer’s nose. However, I couldn’t find towing capacity and safety is first for me. Thank you!

I took a look in the owner's manual for a 2001 Ford Expedition and it states that the factory bumper can support up to 400 lbs tongue weight and 4,000 lbs gross trailer weight. If the trailer exceeds either of these figures then you must use a frame mount hitch. That said, the frame mounted hitch is a far better option as it brings the connection point down so you can then tow level. If you try to tow with the bumper and the trailer is not level you can have issues with trailer sway. For this, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13049.

If you do just decide to use the rear bumper, you'll need part # 63845 for 2" couplers but again I really think the hitch mounted option is the better route if you will be towing frequently.
