How To Keep Propane Tanks Warm In Below Freezing Temperatures
Updated 01/27/2020 | Published 01/25/2020 >
Question:
Trying to keep two 30# 7 gal propane tanks warm in sub-zero temps. Tanks are on an RV, have had issues at very low temps below 0 F when running heater, generator and water heater at the same time. The only remedy I can seem to find is raising the tank temperature. Would like a 12v heating element that can do this adequately. thanks

I may have some options for you but the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank or Step Heater Pad w/ Thermostat - 18-1/4" Long x 12" Wide part # 277-000164 is made for fresh water tanks. The thermostat of the heating pad turns the pad off at 67 degrees but since the pad is smaller I don't recommend using it on the propane tank because it is such a centralized amount of heat in one spot on the tank that is could cause pressure build up which leads to blowing a valve.
Propane does not freeze until -44 degrees F however you may experience pressure drops well before that temperature. One way to help stop this is to keep the tank full which means filling your tank more often. Another option I recommend is to use a low temperature heated electric blanket to wrap around the tanks. This is the safest practice.
