Will the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank or Step Heater Pad w/ Thermostat Work in My Van for Water Tanks?

Updated 04/08/2025 | Published 04/04/2025

Question:

I have 3 separate 5 gallon water canisters - I was wondering if i used one of the 12 x 18 pads under these tanks, if it would work? I would not be able adhere them, just sit them on the pad. I am thinking the weight of the water would keep them in good contact. I just want to keep portable camp water tanks from freezing in my van.

Hello Dan,

Yes, you can definitely use that 12" x 18" Therma Heat pad # 277-000164 under your 5-gallon water jugs to help keep them from freezing in your van. The pad is made to stick onto RV water tanks, but since your jugs are heavy when full, just placing them on top should work pretty well.

One thing to keep in mind is the bottom of your jugs, if they’re not flat (like if they have ridges), the pad might not touch them evenly. If that’s the case, you can put something thin and flat, like a baking sheet or piece of metal, between the pad and the jugs to help spread the heat out better.

Also, make sure the pad is sitting on something safe and sturdy, like a wood board or foam panel, and keep it dry. The pad doesn’t use a lot of power (about the same as a small light bulb), but it’s still a good idea to make sure your van’s power system can handle it.

All in all, it should work just fine to help keep your water from freezing.
