Can 2009 Hyundai Sonata with 5-Speed Manual Transmission Be Flat Towed and Parts Needed
Question:

Since your 2009 Hyundai Sonata features a manual transmission, it can be flat towed. According to the online version of the owner's manual, when towing with all four wheels on the ground, the ignition key should be placed in the "ACC" position and the trans-axle in "N" (Neutral).
Now, let's go over the 5 main components that are needed to safely flat tow your vehicle:
Tow bar - link between your RV and your Sonata
Base plate kit - custom made to install on the frond end of your Sonata - provides connection point for tow bar
Safety cable set - keeps your Sonata connected to your RV in the rare event that your set up is somehow uncoupled
Tow bar wiring - allows your Sonata's tail lights work in sync with your RV's tail lights
Supplemental braking system - allows your Sonata's brakes to work in sync with your RV's brakes
Below I'll explain my recommendations for each:
Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX2321 - This is the most popular choice for Sonata owners. It features removable bracket arms, which provide a clean, unobtrusive look when your car is not being towed. I attached a photo for reference.
Demco Commander II Tow Bar # DM9511012 - The arms are telescoping for easier hook-up and non-binding for minimal effort when unhooking even on unlevel ground. Bonus: the safety cables are included!
Roadmaster Diode Wiring Kit # RM-15267 - Most reliable wiring kit for your Sonata prevents electrical feedback and the damage it can cause to your vehicle's electrical components. A 7-wire to 6-wire coiled electrical cord is included to connect to your RV plug.
Roadmaster Even Brake Supplemental Braking System # RM-9400 - This system is one of my favorites because it's portable (fit's most vehicles) and easy to use. It's proportional which means the brakes on your Sonata are activated at the same time and with the same intensity as those in your RV.
You'll also need a brake light relay # RM-88400 as without it, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.
You will likely also need a high-low adapter to make up for the height difference between your RV and your Sonata. Once installed, the Blue Ox base plates will have a bracket height of 15 inches (from the ground). To calculate the amount of drop needed, measure your RV's hitch height (ground to top of receiver opening) and deduct the 15 inches from it. I'll attach a link to our available selection of high-low adapters for you to browse through along with a couple helpful articles.
