In order to flat tow your 1996 Toyota RAV4, all wheel drive with manual transmission, I have found that you will need to have a transmission lube pump installed. For other towing requirements for your vehicle, be sure to consult the owners manual.
There are several other components that are needed to flat tow a vehicle starting with base plates. Base plates provide a safe and secure attachment point for a tow bar. You can use XL Base Plates, # 1142-1. For a tow bar, you will need one that is compatible with XL style base plates like the Tracker Tow Bar, # RM-020. In order to make the front base plate extensions removable when using this tow bar, you will also need Quick Disconnects, # RM-201.
Next you will need safety cables and lighting. For cables, I recommend the Roadmaster Safety Cables, # RM-643. For lighting, there are a couple of possible solutions. I have included a link to our flat towing series of FAQ articles, some of which cover the various lighting options so you can decide which is best for you.
Last, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. I recommend the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System, # RM-9400. This is a proportional braking system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the RV is braking. This not only makes for safer braking situations, but it also reduces wear and tear on both the vehicle and RV brakes.
