Question:
will the side wind operate easier than the top wind

The choice between a side wind jack like the etrailer Round, A-Frame Jack - Sidewind, part # TJA-5000S-B, and a top wind jack like the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack - Topwind, part # BD155032, will usually be for clearance issues. A top wind jack will be used when there is something on the trailer that will interfere with the rotation of the side wind handle on the jack and a side wind jack would be used if there is interference for the top wind jack handle.
If the clearance issues are not a factor and you have the choice of both style of jacks, I would say the side wind jack might be the easier of the two styles to operate. Since you will be turning the crank up and down on a side wind jack instead of side to side on a top wind jack.
There is no difference in how the two different style of jacks will perform, but just the difference in the ease of operation.
