Troubleshooting Plug-N-Tow Wiring Harness Part # 40455 on 2006 Ford Escape

Published 10/20/2008

Question:

I may need some troubleshooting help with the 40455 hoppy wiring harness. I have installed on my 2006 Ford escape on the plug in tow package behind the bumper and did not work. I put in terminal grease and tried a volt meter to see if i had any power but to no avail. What is your recommendation I should try? If the plug behind the bumper is for a tow package do I have to go farthur upstream to see if it is plugged in to power?

My guess is that your Escape was not equipped with the Tow Package from the factory. The plug for the Hoppy wiring harness will be present behind the bumper, but unless the Escape has the tow package it will NOT be active. To activate, a relay will need to be placed into the wiring block located behind the dash. From what I understand, the relay would need to be obtained from your Ford Dealer.

If your Escape is not equipped with the Tow Package, your best bet would be to use the T-1 Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118426. This harness would plug inline behind the tail light assemblies, and one wire would need to be ran to the positive battery terminal (see the provided link for instructions).
