Recommended Hitch for Maximizing Towing Capacity on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Hi there, I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7L V6 and am looking at installing a better tow package so I can haul a larger trailer. I bought my vehicle used and it has a small hitch and electrical already hooked up. So, in order to increase my towing capabilities, what is the best method without compromising the performance and longevity of my Jeep? With your recommendation, what is the max weight of the future trailer that I would be able to tow? Thanks,

First thing to know is that you cannot increase your towing capacity by upgrading your hitch. Instead you can maximize your towing capacity. You will have to abide by the lowest rated component in your setup, which may end up being your vehicle in this case.

In my research for your vehicle I came across the weight capacities per drivetrain, I've attached a snapshot of this from page 312. This should also be listed on the placard on the inside of your driver's door. The Draw-Tite 2 inch hitch # 75338 will fit your 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee as long as it's not an SRT-8 model, but it will not increase your capacities to the 750lbs tongue and 5,000lbs towing. Since you have the 3.7L, it would just maximize your capacity by allowing full range of the 350lbs tongue and 3,500lbs towing. The following pages after 312 talk about loading your trailer and vehicle and should also be consulted before towing. The max trailer weight should not exceed 3,500lbs for your vehicle, the Draw-Tite hitch # 75338 is confirmed to allow this 3,500lbs max trailer weight.

We have found that if you plan on towing to your maximum capacities, it is a good idea to get an additional transmission cooler like the Derale # D13503 to help keep your engine from overheating under the circumstances, this will help preserve the performance and longevity of your Jeep.
