I checked the owner's manual for a 2015 Chevy Equinox and models that have the 2.4 liter motor can tow up to 1,500 pounds and models with the 3.6 liter can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The manual also specifies that these capacities are for trailers with brakes. It doesn't provide any capacity information for trailers without brakes.
The Class III trailer hitches for your vehicle such as # 13591 have a gross trailer weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. So if you have the 3.6 liter motor the capacity you could tow tops out at 3,500 pounds. But if you have the 2.4 liter motor then the most you can tow is 1,500 pounds even though the hitch has a higher capacity.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
And for trailer wiring you can use Tow Ready harness # 118494. I have linked videos showing example installations of both the hitch and the wiring for you.
