How to Carry 3 Bikes on a 2012 Hyundai Accent

Question:

I read the article that states this bike rack will not work with a Class I receiver. Is the stopper installed on the Class I receivers removable? I mean, I dont see many Class II hitches that are 1-1/4inch - so why not make this with a 2inch shank to begin with? I want a good stable rack for my Hyundai Accent. Im ordering your Drawtite class I hitch this seems like the best for the money. I will primarily carrying two mountain bikes, maybe three. But it seems I can never do three on my Accent, according to your articles. Correct?

Actually, all Class II trailer hitches are 1-1/4 inches, same as Class I. Class III and IV hitches have 2 inch receivers. Class V hitches have 2-1/2 inch receivers. The tab or stop should not be removed. Removing it would void the hitch warranty and it would require grinding it off which could weaken the hitch.

You are correct about the number of bikes you can carry on a Class I hitch. It is limited to two. That is actually something hitch manufacturers and bike rack manufacturers agree on.

For a Class I compatible bike rack that holds 2 bikes I recommend the Swagman Trailhead, # S63360. I have included a link to a video review of this bike rack to the right for you.

Another option, to carry 3 bikes, would be to use a trunk mount bike rack such as the Raceway, # TH9002PRO. It will hold 3 bikes and you would not have to buy a hitch and bike rack so you would save some money.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
