Why Does the Running Light Circuit of a 4-Way Go to Both Sides of Trailer

The brown wire of a 4-way connector is the running light circuit which goes to both sides of a trailer since that circuit is used for both taillights.

What most people do is run the wires for both sides of the trailer to a single butt connector like # 05732-2 and then run a single wire back from there to the single brown wire on the 4-way.

Some 4-ways have what's called a wishboned running light circuit like part # A35W42B which basically has two running light(brown) wires.
