Choosing Between Tekonsha Brake Controllers

When it comes to choosing a brake controller, a lot of them are gonna look very much the same. And two of them that I really like are from Tekonsha. We have the Prodigy P2 and the Prodigy P3. So, they look very similar, but they do have quite a few differences and we're hoping to break that down, that way you can decide which one's best for you. Here we have our P3 installed and really it comes down to it has more bells and whistles than the P2, otherwise it's pretty much the same controller. The P3 does have a nicer/easier to use display. more

If you're going down a hill you don't have to worry about false triggers being activated because the brake controller is not activated at all until you apply the brakes in your vehicle. When you apply the brakes it shows how much power is going to your trailer brakes. Now, as you hold the brakes for awhile it dials down the power so you don't have to worry about your magnetics on your trailer brakes becoming overheated and shorting out. more

Today in our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, we're going to be installing Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller. With Tekonsha's plug-wiring adaptor. This is a proportional trailer brake controller that works up to four axles. What's really nice about it being proportional is that the harder you brake here in the vehicle, the inertia sensor inside the brake controller's gonna detect that and appropriately apply the brakes on your trailer behind you to insure that it's stopping the same as your vehicle. The output for the trailer brakes can be adjusted here. So if you need to fine-tune it for your specific trailer, you can do that. There's a boost button located on the top on the right. And this is for the various boost settings that are available. There's off, one, two, and three.Boost setting one is for when you have a trailer that's slightly less than the weight of your vehicle.Boost two is for when you have a trailer that's weighs roughly the same as your vehicle. And boost three is for when you have a trailer weighs more than your vehicle. That will help adjust that inertia sensor readout to help apply the brakes appropriate for that trailer weight. We begin our installation by plugging in our wiring adapter. Also, we have the ability to tow a trailer that has electric over hydraulic brakes with no input required from us at all on the brake controller in order to make the setting change for that to work. We're also going to be using the Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter. That part number is 3016. Here's what the P2 is going to look like when you get it installed in your vehicle. This is a proportional breaking system, so this is going to take the inertia from your vehicle and translate that into breaking power using the accelerometer located inside. So on very quick and abrupt stops, where we're really trying to stop quickly, this is going to go right up to our maximum power rapidly and deliver that braking to us when we need it in an emergency. When we're in city streets and just slowly on and off the brakes just trying to maintain speed, this is going to do it much more gradually, reducing the heat build-up in our brakes and also only using what we need at that time. The "C" here is going to indicate that we've got a trailer connected, so if you see a "DC" come up, it means you've got a disconnect situation. more

DIY 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Installation for the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller

Today on our 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, we'll be installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part number 90885. The vehicle is already equipped with manufacturer's 7-pole connector, so we'll need to go underneath the dashboard here on the driver's side and locate the brake controller pigtail. This is a 4-wire pigtail, has taped up and marked indicating the wiring. Now we've identified the manufacturer's wiring, we'll need to take the pigtail provided by the brake controller and hardwired to the manufacturer's wiring. I'm going to go ahead and cut the end off and strip back the wire. Now with those stripped back we'll go ahead and take the butt connectors provided by the install kit and secure it to the end. Now with the butt connectors installed, we can go ahead and attach the brake controller wiring. more

There is a plastic trim panel right here along this edge that goes toward the front of the vehicle. There are two screws here and here that we have to remove so you can take it down and out of the way to get to the wire harness. From here it should just unsnap. Over here on the far left is the wires for the brake controller. They are taped up so you will probably have to pull them out a little and we have our four wires. 00:43 more

Today on this 2009 Chrysler Aspen we are going to install part number 90885, the Prodigy P2 brake controller. We are also going to use the install kit, part number ETBC7. The first thing we are going to do is install the bracket for the ETBC7 kit. We are going to install it right next to the hitch. And we are actually going to mount the bracket backwards so we can hide the connector a little bit behind the plastic on the bumper cover. The next step is to go ahead and do some partial assembly on the 7-pole itself. What we will do is we will go ahead and add the gray cable and we will hook it up to our 7-pole connector. What we are going to do is actually just wind this up with electric tape and leave our leads out that we need. We will leave our 4-pole sticking out and we are going to need our brake wire which is going to be blue and our black wire for 12 volt power supply. And then we will just wrap up our purple and white wires. Our white wire is going to go directly to the frame for ground. And then the purple wire is going to be for reverse lights, if it is ever needed. 1:01 more
