How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe

Today on our 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe we're going to review and install the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller, part number 90885. We'll install it in conjunction with the Tekonsha direct fit wiring harness, part number 3016. Now here's what our brake controller looks like once it's installed. Now let's go ahead and plug in our trailer brakes. As we plug in our trailer brakes we'll get a C on our display screen to indicate that our trailer braking is connected. Here on the driver side of the brake controller is our gain control, allows us to raise or lower the power or maximum output going to our trailer brakes. Our push button here on the passenger side of the brake controller is for our boost control.

We press it once, we see that the boost feature is off. Press it again, we get a B1 for boost one, 2, or 3. The higher the boost, the more immediate power we have when we press on the brake in our vehicle and it automatically sends to the trailer braking. Typically, the larger the trailer and the larger the load, the higher the boost. Then at the bottom of our brake controller is our manual sweep. This allows us to apply trailer braking without pressing on the brake pedal.

One of the really nice features about this brake controller is it could be mounted in any position as long as it's reachable by the driver and it's perpendicular with the front of the vehicle, meaning that the LCD screen faces the rear of the vehicle and the plug will face the front of the vehicle. Now let's go ahead and show you how to install it. Now to begin our install we need to location the manufacturer's brake controller port. The port itself is underneath the black cover here on the driver side between the parking brake and brake pedal. The cover itself has a total of three locks on it. We'll just pull back on these plastic fasteners, release the cover.

Once the cover is removed, on the driver side of the box will be a four-pin that will match our direct fit wiring harness connector. We can simply take our direct fit wiring harness and plug into the manufacturer's brake controller port. Now once we're plugged in we'll go ahead and reinstall the cover and route the other end of our wiring harness to over where we're going to mount the brake controller. Keep in mind, as you route your wiring harness you want to stay away from any moving components such as the steering shaft, parking, or brake pedal. Now once I get the brake controller pigtail in the area where the brake controller's going to get mounted, we'll just leave it there for now and bring in the brake controller bracket. The brake controller bracket's going to get secured here underneath the dash.

We'll just use the hardware provided to secure it. We're now ready to go ahead and and start installing the brake controller. We'll bring in our P2 brake controller and then in the back we can plug in our direct fit wiring harness pigtail, then mount it to the bracket using the hardware provided. Now with everything installed, we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller, part number 90885, in conjunction with the direct fit wiring harness, part number 3016, on our 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe. .
