Helpful Expert Reply:
The Optronics # TL21RK Magnetic Mount Taillight Kit uses 18 gauge wires. It would be difficult to quantify the exact strength of the magnets, but I've stuck one of them to a 6 pound trailer drawbar, and found the magnet had plenty of strength to hold the drawbar without coming loose.
In other words, the magnet is plenty strong enough to prevent the lamp from being knocked off by wind or turbulence from passing traffic. Keep in mind that the thickness of the metal the magnet is placed on will also have a bearing on how well the magnet adheres.
