Can Firestone Air Bags be Used with Weight Distribution Hitch when Towing a Trailer
Question:
are these air bags compatible with a weight distribution hitch?

Expert Reply:
You could use air bags and weight distribution at the same time. But if you are experiencing rear end sag on the tow vehicle caused by towing a trailer then the best solution is weight distribution. But not just any weight distribution system. It has to be the proper capacity.
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
If the system is rated too high it creates a harsh ride and won't be effective. If it is rated too low it will not distribute any weight. And if it is not set up right you can still get rear end sag.
Air bags and similar products are best for carrying loads in a vehicle. In some cases, where there is still sag even when using weight distribution, suspension enhancement is the only other option to alleviate the problem.
