How Does the MoonShade Pro Awning Attach Without Drilling or a Roof Rack?

Published 11/04/2026

Question:

Ive got a van that we use for camping and weekend trips, but I dont have a roof rack installed. Ive been looking at the MoonShade Pro MN27FR because I like the idea of having some shade and privacy right beside the truck. Im just a little confused about how it actually attaches. Does it need to be bolted to the roof, or can I set it up without making any permanent changes to my truck? Id rather not start drilling holes just to add an awning.

Hey Eric! The nice thing about the Moon Fabrications MoonShade Pro # MN27FR is that you don't need a roof rack or have to drill holes in your truck to enjoy some shade at camp! You can attach it using the MoonMount Round Vacuum Anchors # MN87FR, which are basically heavy duty suction cups with a pretty clever design. Instead of just pressing them against your truck and hoping they stay put, each anchor has a built in pump that removes the air and creates a strong vacuum seal. Each one is rated for 100 lbs of pull force, so these aren't your ordinary suction cups!

I know attaching an awning to your truck with vacuum mounts might sound a little questionable at first, but these are specifically designed for this kind of setup. They attach to suitable smooth surfaces like painted metal or glass, giving you a secure connection without making permanent changes to your vehicle. Just make sure the surface is clean and check that the anchors are holding properly throughout your stay.

You'll need two of the MoonMount Vacuum Anchors # MN87FR and they're sold individually, so be sure to grab a pair since they aren't included with the awning. Once everything is set up, you'll have a nice 9' x 9' shaded area with zip on walls for privacy whenever you want it.

Does your van have a smooth roofline where you'd like to mount the awning, or were you thinking about attaching it somewhere else?
