Trailer Hitch for 2024 BMW iX Towing Sailboat

Updated 11/03/2026 | Published 11/01/2026

Question:

I’m currently evaluating a BMW iX as a very occasional tow vehicle for a 3000 pound sailboat. Though I see they are rated for that and more outside of the US, I can’t find anything BMW has put in print regarding a US rating. I see you have multiple hitch options and I’m curious if BMW has tested or approved any for the SUV. Please advise.

Hey Jerry! BMW USA now lists the iX with a towing capacity of up to 3,500 lbs, so your 3,000 lb sailboat may be within its towing capacity as long as that includes the trailer and everything loaded on it. I recommend checking the owner's manual or with your local BMW dealer to confirm the towing capacity of the specific iX you're considering.

For a hitch, I recommend the Stealth Hitches Hidden Trailer Hitch with Towing Kit # SH73QR. It has a 6,000 lb towing capacity and includes the ball mount and trailer wiring you'll need. However, you'll still be limited to the towing capacity of the vehicle. BMW won't have any information on testing or approval for aftermarket hitches.

What kind of sailboat do you have?

Thank you Robin. I’ll try to confirm with BMW. Have a link by chance?

@JerryK you're welcome! I found the 3,500 lb towing capacity listed under the All-Electric FAQ section on BMWUSA.com. I'd still verify the rating for the specific model you're considering, but that gives you something directly from BMW to reference.
