Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack for 4 Bikes Configuration

Updated 10/21/2026 | Published 10/20/2026

Question:

For the Kuat piston pro x 4 bike rack, can you purchase it so that you can go from four bike to 2 bike configuration? Or is that a separate purchase of a different 2 bike model that you then add another 2 bike addition that you purchase separately? In addition, depending on the answer, how do the integrated lights work if you have to buy two separate sections? Do they disconnect easily if it’s one unit that separates to go down to 2 bike? Or do you need to buy two units that work with each other that are compatible? Just purchase an e-bike for my son and will buy another for myself soon. Then looking to buy for my wife and daughter in the future as well. I hope this makes sense. Oh and the vehicle is a Lexus GX 550 if that makes a difference. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, J. M. Thanks for letting us help J.M. The Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # KU45VR is actually the Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # KU98VR kitted together with the 2 Bike Add On # KU78VR, so it's exactly the setup you're describing! The nice thing about this system is that you can add or remove the two bike extension as needed depending on how many bikes you're transporting.

As far as the integrated lighting goes, the main two bike rack includes a wiring harness that plugs into your vehicle's 4 flat trailer connector. The two bike add on has its own connector that plugs directly into the main rack, allowing the lights to function in either configuration. I've included a couple of screenshots from the installation instructions showing how these connections work.

One thing to consider is that when in the four bike configuration, the # KU45VR has a weight capacity of 40 lbs per bike. That jumps up to 67 lbs per bike when in the two bike configuration. You will just want to keep this in mind when looking at E bikes.

From what I was able to find, your Lexus GX 550 comes equipped with a factory 2" hitch receiver and the appropriate trailer connector, so you should already have everything you need on the vehicle side to use the # KU45VR .

Congratulations on the new and future bikes by the way. Where are you planning on riding mostly?

Thank you very much Christopher. This is very helpful. I do have to think about the weight capacity details. I believe this specialized EMTB we purchased weighs about 50lbs. The next will be roughly the same which is fine for the two rack but if each of the next is the same, we will be over by 40lbs roughly. Is there a rack that you can recommend that would work for this situation? We plan to ride various trails and cities in Northern California’s Sf Bay Area and Monterey Bay Area. The plan is that sometimes all four of us would be together and that’s when we would be over capacity. I appreciate your input. Thank you once again. This site is great!! Sincerely, J. M. Perales

@JP Happy to help! Sounds like some scenic riding! In order to get you to the capacities you need, the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # Y95MX would be a better fit. This is a similar configuration to the # KU45VR in that it is a two bike rack kitted with the two bike add on. In the four bike configuration, the # Y95MX has a 60 lbs capacity for the two trays closest to the vehicle and 50 lbs for the two rear trays. These capacities do decrease if you go offroad which is something to keep in mind. The wheel trays have a maximum tire width of 4-13/16" and the wheelbase range on the rack is 34" to 50". Unfortunately, there is not a dedicated light kit for this rack but you could likely use something like # e67RV to add them.
