Can I Use the Weigh Safe Aero Hitch as a TW Scale for a 2" Hitch Ball w/o the Clamshell Adapter?

Updated 10/16/2026 | Published 10/15/2026

Question:

Im thinking about purchasing this just to determine tongue weight and not for towing at all. Given that, am I correct in assuming I can just use the solid 2inch ball on my 2 5/16inch hitch to determine tongue weight? That way I can avoid the 2 5/16inch Clamshell Conundrum many are having. Thanks much!! Jim

Hi Jim,

You can definitely use the Weigh Safe Aero Hitch part # WS47MR just to measure the tongue weight and not for towing if you want. However, I don't recommend using a 2" hitch ball without a clamshell adapter on it to measure the trailer's tongue weight. The reason for that being that the 2" ball is smaller than a 2 5/16" coupler so it won't sit properly on the scale. For the tongue weight measurement to be accurate the scale needs to be properly loaded, and an undersized ball can cause it to shift or sit unevenly.

If you're just wanting to measure tongue weight, getting a dedicated tongue weight scale might be an easier and more cost-effective option. Like the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale part # BTBRV004 that's rated for 1,000lbs of tongue weight. Or if you need a higher rated scale, the Big Truck Big RV Scale also comes in a 2,000lb tongue weight option which is part # BTBRV49FR.

What kind of trailer are you hauling?
