Enclosed Winch Recommendation for Boat Trailer

Published 10/07/2026

Question:

Hello eTrailer Team, I’m looking to replace and upgrade the winch on my boat trailer and was hoping you could help identify a compatible model. My previous winch was a Fulton 1,500-lb model part 142208. Ideally, I’d like to upgrade to an 1,800-lb or higher-capacity winch, preferably one with enclosed or partially covered gears. My main concern is mounting compatibility. My trailer has three existing threaded mounting holes, and I do not have access to the underside of the mounting plate to install additional nuts or bolts. I therefore need a replacement that fits the existing holes without drilling or modifying the mount. My existing mounting pattern is: * Two front holes spaced 2 inches center-to-center. * One rear hole centered between the two front holes. * The distance from each front hole to the rear hole is 4? inches 4.125 inches, measured diagonally, center-to-center. * The perpendicular front-to-rear spacing is approximately 4 inches. I’m particularly interested in the Fulton XLT 1,800-lb winch part 142314, but I’m open to other Fulton models or brands if they offer a better fit. Could you please recommend which winches rated for 1,800 lbs or more would fit this mounting pattern? Ideally, I’d appreciate confirmation of the actual mounting-slot dimensions so I can be confident the replacement will bolt directly onto my trailer. Thank you for your help!

Hey Chey, since you are looking for a higher rated enclosed winch I recommend the Dutton Lainson 2,600 lb winch part # DL17085 which is enclosed and is rated for 2,600 lbs. This means it will be a lot easier to crank than what you have now. This USA made winch also has a slotted mounting bolt pattern which means that it will easily match up to the mounting bracket you have as well. What kind of boat do you have?
