5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for Using a Reese Sidewinder on a 2018 Toyota Tundra With a 5.5ft Bed

Updated 09/23/2026 | Published 09/19/2026

Question:

Can a Reese sidewinder pinbox be used in conjunction with the Anderson Ultimate 5th wheel connection in a 2018 Toyota Tundra 4x4 Crewmax 5.5ft. bed and still have clearance of the cab especially when turning?

Hey Ronald.

No, I do not recommend the combination of Reese Sidewinder pinbox and Anderson Ultimate 5th wheel in any configuration, even with the turret locked out. Reese recommends against using any gooseneck to 5th wheel adapter with their Sidewinder as they're not built to sustain the forces applied by a Sidewinder. I recommend picking up the Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM53XV you were looking at. I like the wraparound jaw as this greatly reduces rattle. Plus, this hitch is a custom fit for your 5.5ft bed configuration and works with rotating pin boxes, such as the Reese Sidewinder. You're also going to need the Sidewinder Wedge which you can source directly from Reese, P/N 68204. We unfortunately don't carry the wedge.

Have you had any cab-clearance issues with your Tundra and fifth wheel in the past?

Trent, thank you for the information. This is my initial purchase of a 5th wheel and Tundra combination. I'm researching all aspects to get maximum clearance between the camper nose cap and the rear of the truck cab, especially when turning. Any suggestions are welcomed.
