What Causes Trailer Suspension Equalizer to Fold

Updated 09/16/2026 | Published 09/14/2026

Question:

My Tandem axle Bass Boat Trailer leaf springs are hitting trailer frame at the rear of the equalizers. The trailer is as close to level as I can get with a drop hitch. There is no adjustment for the boat on the trailer it sits where it sits. I’ve replaced the springs and equalizers and all the parts with like parts and it hasn’t helped the issue. The engine weighs 560lbs and hangs off the back off the boat about 12” via a jack plate. So I think that’s part of the issue. Any thoughts on how I fix this issue? Thanks,

Hey Michael, this problem is usually caused by an equalizer that is too long or leaf springs that are too long. Basically the extra length doesn't have anywhere to go so it folds up the equalizer and makes it sit at an angle. Easiest solution is probably going to be to go with an equalizer that is shorter in length from front to back. To pick that out I would need to know that dimension on your trailer currently.
