Ramp Door Spring Solution for a 2015 Dutchmen Voltage 3605 Toy Hauler

Question:
I have a 2015 Dutchmen Voltage 3605 toy hauler and I’m trying to determine if part CB250D96SHD can be used with my rear ramp door. The ramp door is extremely heavy and currently takes three adults to lift/close it. The existing hinge springs have already been replaced, but it is still far too heavy. The rear opening is approximately 96 inches wide from wall to wall. I’m looking for a heavy-duty counterbalance/spring assist system that will significantly reduce the effort required to raise the ramp. I do not use the rear patio/screen system, so I can remove it if necessary for installation. Can you confirm whether CB250D96SHD will work on my Voltage 3605? If not, could you recommend the correct counterbalance system for this application and let me know what measurements you need from me to determine the proper setup? Thank you, Josh

Hi Josh, the # CB250D96SHD isn’t the one I’d use on your 2015 Dutchmen Voltage 3605. Even though the width is close, that system is designed for enclosed trailer ramp doors and is only rated for a 250 lb door, so I wouldn’t want you installing it on that heavy Voltage ramp and hoping for the best.
Since you’ve already replaced the original hinge springs and it still takes three adults to close the ramp, I think your best move is to take it to a professional garage door or trailer door shop that works with torsion spring systems. They can weigh the ramp and determine whether it needs a higher capacity spring setup and what can safely be mounted to the structure of your toy hauler. Those springs store a tremendous amount of energy, so with a door this heavy, I’d much rather have someone who works with them every day size and install it correctly.
I know that’s not quite as simple as giving you a part number, but I think you’ll end up with a much better solution than trying to adapt the # CB250D96SHD.
