Why Does The Malone MicroSportXT Trailer # MPG460XT Have A 65-mph Max Speed Rating?

Updated 08/18/2026 | Published 08/12/2026

Question:

EcoLight trailer has a speed limit of 65 mph what changes need to be made to increase speed limit to 70 mph? trailer weight? wheel size? load being carried? can you help explain the limitation? Thank You Andy

Hey Andrew, thanks for reaching out, and good question. The 65 mph limit on the Malone MicroSportXT Trailer # MPG460XT is tied to the trailer's wheel/tire package, not the amount of weight you are carrying. Malone lists the EcoLight with 8-inch wheels and 4.80/4.00-8 Load Range B tires, and the current EcoLight specs rate that wheel package to 65 mph. The trailer itself has a 400 lb load capacity, so staying under that weight does not raise the speed rating.

To run 70 mph, I would only do it after upgrading to a wheel and tire combination that is explicitly rated for 70 mph or higher. The Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT48012C is what I recommend for that. It has an 81-mph speed rating. It's a solid tire that will be a nice upgrade from the stock tires.

What kayaks are you hauling, and where do you most love to paddle?

@AndrewL Nice! The Malone MicroSportXT Trailer # MPG460XT will work great for that. Your kayaks are well under the size and weight limitations for the trailer. Also, we are here in Wentzville, MO, so I'm very familiar with those areas. I've floated on the Meramec River several times. Recently we've really been liking floating Big River in DeSoto. I do a ton of fishing around here especially at Innsbrook and of course Lake of the Ozarks.
