Can the Cable Sheath Be Reattached to a LaSalle Bristol Cable-Actuated RV Waste Valve?

Updated 08/25/2026 | Published 08/11/2026

Question:

I just pulled my 3inch Lasalle Bristol black water valve and the 96inch cable out of trailer. The failure indication is the stem and handle actuator wouldnt stay in and not operating of the gate valve. This is due to the rubber or plastic cable sheath coming out ofthe acuator metal threaded tube. Can you please explain how the cable sheaths are connected to the actuator tube there are external threads on metal tube but no swedged/ friction nut to hold the plastic sheath in place. My plastic cable sheath came apart from the threaded metal tube behind my reflections utility panel. I see internal threads inside and the metal cable attached to the aluminum stem.

Hello Robert,

Thanks for writing in!

From what you're describing, the outer cable sheath has separated from the metal portion of the actuator assembly. Unfortunately, LaSalle Bristol doesn't offer that cable assembly as a serviceable replacement part, and I don't have a manufacturer-approved way to reattach the sheath once it has separated. Because of that, I wouldn't try to crimp, glue, or otherwise put that connection back together.

That outer sheath needs to stay stationary while the inner cable moves the gate valve. Once the sheath comes loose, you'll end up with the movement you're describing where the handle and stem aren't properly operating the gate.

At this point, I recommend replacing the complete assembly with the LaSalle Bristol Cable-Actuated RV Waste Valve # 34466N4BB96GM. This gets you the 3" spigot-to-spigot black water valve along with the 96" cable as one complete assembly.

Since this is a spigot-to-spigot valve, you'll also want the LaSalle Bristol ABS Solvent Cement # 3447530889 for the installation. This will give you what you need to properly connect the new valve to your ABS sewer plumbing.

I know replacing the whole assembly isn't quite as convenient as repairing just the cable, but when it comes to a black tank valve, I would much rather replace it properly than risk that cable connection coming apart again.

Did you catch this while working on the trailer at home, or are you getting everything fixed up for a camping trip coming up?

it sounds like one of two things happened either the cable was installed incorrectly and it is pulling through the wall or like kate stated the cable itself has failed and the next step would be to replace the system entirely.

Lasalle Bristol sent a new cable and valve . Upon inspection this is the same flawed design but I appreciate the replacement. I did wrap the connection point with electrical tape where the sheath fits inside the threaded tube. This is replacement is not easy having to cut into the thin under cover of my grand design to access the cable and valve. The utility panel was also removed and moved to undue the control cable.

@RobertH Thanks for the update Robert. I’m glad LaSalle Bristol was able to get a new cable and valve out to you, but I definitely understand your concern seeing the replacement has the same design as the original. Especially after everything you had to go through just to get to it. Cutting into the underbelly and moving the utility panel certainly doesn’t make for a quick and easy replacement. Hopefully adding the electrical tape at that connection point helps keep everything secure and this one gives you much better luck. I appreciate you taking the time to let us know how the replacement went
