Can Handrails For Steps Be Mounted On Both Sides Of A Doorway?

Updated 08/13/2026 | Published 08/08/2026

Question:

We are looking to purchase a 2027 Jayco Jay Feather Air SL 15TBSL to pull with our 2018 Audi Q5. My wife has mobility issues, but can climb stairs with the use of a railing on both sides. Is there a stair system that can be folded up in the doorway with rails on both sides, and sets the feet on the ground?

Hi Rodney!

We may have an option for you, but there are going to be a couple things you will want to take into account.

First and foremost, basically all RV/Camper doors will open by swinging out to the right. Due to this, there will be no mounting holes/hardware pre-installed on the right side of steps. That means you will have to drill into the new steps to mount something like the MORryde Handrail # MR83AR on both sides. This is specifically for the 3 step MORryde StepAbove Steps (like the # MR68RR you were looking at) and if you can tell me the entry height (from ground to threshold) and the doorway width (from inside flange to inside flange), I can find the steps you are looking for. Combining the StepAbove steps and the mentioned handrail would have everything fold into the camper when you fold them up.

The other thing to note is that since doors open out and to the right, any kind of handrail is going to keep the door from being able to open all the way. There is a chance the # MR83AR mounted on the right side of the steps will allow the door to open all the way, but that is due to there being a pretty large gap between the end of it and the top of the steps (see included image as it does a better job of explaining that). This is typically used in conjunction with an existing folding handrail on a camper, but that will always be on the left side of the doorway (when facing it from the outside). Unless you modify the door by adding something like the Stromberg Carlson # AC-300 to the inside of it, you will have a large gap on the right side. This will likely also require the inner screen door (if your camper has one) to be modified for it to all fit together and close properly. It's definitely possible, but it's going to be some work to accomplish.

You will also want to make sure the door is very secure when it's open so the handle mounted to the inside of it has a good amount of rigidity to it. Typically, manufacturers use a plastic T-Hook and keeper (like the # 37210324) to hold the door open, but I highly recommend replacing that with a metal one. You will need to find one that matches what comes on your camper, but metal will always be more secure than plastic for something like this. I included a link to all of the metal ones we offer to make that part easier.

I know this is a lot of information to take in, so let me know if you have any questions or anything.

Hi Rodney. I don’t have a ready made solution to your bilateral hand rail requirement. If Lazar’s suggestions don’t work for you I would have your local fabricating shop make a fixed bracket on the right inside of the step that could be slid in and out of by a handrail such as the one pictured. Wouldn’t be complicated. I really only responded to say that the steps are very secure/ stable and easily accommodate unevenness of the ground. I have had both hips and one knee replaced and we purchased this for the stability (wife’s insistence). We are happy with them. Hope all works out and you can enjoy the great outdoors.
