Installation of Yakima Skyline Roof Rack for 2026 Toyota Tacoma Carrying Canoe

Updated 08/04/2026 | Published 07/29/2026

Question:

Hi, I have a 2026 Tacoma Off-Road 4th gen and Im planning to buy the Yakima LandingPad 33 with SkyLine towers, installing just the front pair on the cabs factory fixed points to carry the bow of a 16-ft canoe the rear crossbars live on a bed cap. Before ordering, I popped one of the plastic covers in the roof ditch to check the mounting point, and I dont see a threaded hole — just a stamped plate with a rectangular opening and two metal spring tabs sticking up I can share a photo. Could you confirm: Are those tabs a removable retainer clip that comes out before the pad installs, and whats the right way to remove them? Once removed, is there an M6-1.0 threaded underneath, and which LP33 setup is correct for the front points on this truck — flat or stepped pad, and which bolt length? Any Tacoma-specific sealing steps so I dont end up with a leak? Any issue installing only the front pair and leaving the rear points capped? Thanks! Turner

Hey Turner! The tabs you're seeing sound like the factory retainer clip. It should pry straight up to expose the threaded mounting point underneath. For your truck, Yakima specifies using the M6 x 40 mm mounting bolts. Since you're only installing the front pair, you'll use the flat landing pad skirt. The stepped skirt is only used on the rear mounting points.

There aren't any Tacoma-specific sealing steps, just follow the instructions and you're good. Running a single crossbar is not an issue either. You will need the following:

-Landing Pad 33 for Yakima SkyLine and Control Towers # Y28RX

-SkyLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars # Y72TR

-Yakima JetStream Crossbar - Aluminum - Black - 50" Long # 8880633

Or

-Yakima JetStream Crossbar - Aluminum - Black - 60" Long # 8880649

What kind of canoe are you carrying?
