Question:

I Have a 2015 Winnebago ERA 170X. can this be integrated in the current system? I have dual AGM batteries and the charging/management system that came with the RV. When the RV is running and the house switch is on, the RV is plugged into shore power, the batteries are charged. I would like to be able to keep the batteries charged when the RV is not running or plugged into shore power, particularly for the fridge. It would be running on gas but still requires power for the cooling fans and display.

Hi Mike,

If you're going to be running your 12V fridge, cooling fans, and display off your dual AGM batteries; you can use the Go Power Solar Flex Eclipse Charging System part # GP67MR with the addition of another panel. The Go Power Solar Flex Eclipse Expansion Kit part # GP77MR will increase the systems watts from 190 watts to 380 watts which is better suited to keeping the fridge running as well as the other electronics. The average 12V compressor fridge uses 30-60 amp hours per day, but the single 190 watt panel would only provide 50–70 amp-hours on a good sunny day, depending on season, shade, temperature, and panel angle. So, on a cloudy day or in the winter it may not fully charge the batteries without the addition of another panel.

Thanks for the response! We really don’t do much off-grid camping. This is more of a question about the RV sitting during the day and keeping the food in the refrigerator cold while we are off doing something like taking a tour. The batteries I don’t think will hold up long enough to keep the refrigerator cool all day or the 12 V stuff running consistently without being plugged into shore power. We went to an amusement park this past weekend and I was worried about leaving the refrigerator on because of concerns about battery power. The refrigerator would be running on gas, but it does take a certain amount of electricity to manage the electronics and the cooling fans. I would really like the ability to either have it automatically switch between solar charging or alternator/short power whatever is available to charge the batteries.

@MikeM Ah okay, since the refrigerator is a propane fridge that won't be pulling nearly as much power so you can stick with just one solar panel. What you're looking for to switch between solar charging and shore power is an inverter like the Progressive Dynamics 1,000 Watt 12V Pure Sine Wave Inverter w/Transfer Switch part # PD94FR. The integrated transfer switch will automatically change from inverter to shore power when you hook up to a power pedestal at the campground. It also has a fixed mount remote that lets you monitor and control the inverter from inside the RV.
