Can Dexter Surge Brake Actuator Work on Tandem Axle Trailer with Brakes on All Axles

Updated 06/17/2026 | Published 06/13/2026

Question:

I am referbishing a tandem axle trailer, I’ve installed knott torsional axles with 10” discs brakes, replacing original leaf springs and rusted out brakes. Old actuator was a A-70 version. Its heavily corroded on external of case, but also the ball hitch is really rusted internally. I have two questions, will this actuator work with all 4 disc calipers, as both axles must be braked in GA. My tongue is 3x3 i realise the 3x5 is not going to be a direct fit, I plan to drill the extra hole I need in the outer casing i need. Do you forget an issue with that plan? Could there be another option?? Please let me know would like to order today.

Hey John, yes the Dexter surge actuator part # DX56FR will work on a tandem axle trailer that has brakes on both axles like what you have. Your plan to mount this on a 3 inch by 3 inch frame will work great as well. Drilling extra holes for it to attach to the trailer tongue will work just fine to secure it. Do need any other replacement brake components?

It will work like a Champ. I did not even use the complete moount, as my application was the exat same and still in good shape, i just slid the actuator out and slid it into mine. It does great with tandom axels and stops Great. Just make sure you get the calipers bled out good, it takes a little longer but pays dividens when you load your trailer.
